Released in October 2020 during the pandemic, Greenland, a disaster film about a family seeking safety from a comet speeding toward Earth, turned out to be an unexpected hit. The movie follows John Garrity (Gerard Butler) and his wife, Allison Garrity (Morena Baccarin), as they try to reach safety in Greenland while chaos unfolds.
Greenland made $52.3 million through its theatrical release and video-on-demand services, gaining enough attention to justify a sequel titled Greenland: Migration. Now that filming on the sequel has finished, discussions about a possible third film have started, according to the film’s producer.
The production for Greenland: Migration began in April, and producer Sébastien Raybaud announced in an interview with Deadline that filming wrapped in July this year.
When asked about a potential third installment, Raybaud revealed that conversations about it had already taken place. However, the plot for Greenland: Migration might create some difficulties in continuing the story. His statement was:
“We wrapped in July, and I saw a first cut this past week, which is great. It’s a great achievement for the filmmakers involved. It’s a $90M film and exactly the type we want to see more of in Europe… We’re thinking about what could happen afterward. There’s something that happens in 2 that could be tricky, but I’m sure we can find a way.”
Greenland: Migration – A Strong Sequel
Whether the sequel will lead to a third film may depend on how audiences react to it. The first Greenland film overcame its grim release timing and an unusual premise, making it possible for a third movie to happen.
The 2020 film followed the Garrity family as they raced to a bunker in Greenland, hoping to survive the comet’s impact.
In Greenland: Migration, the Garrity family and other survivors will leave their bunker in Greenland to search for new homes on a planet devastated by the comet. Director Ric Roman Waugh, who directed the first film, returns for the sequel, and writer Chris Sparling is also back.
The film industry has produced many end-of-the-world stories, but few were released during an actual global crisis, like Greenland. With the sequel now awaiting its release date, Morena Baccarin, speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at FanExpo Chicago, shared that filming the sequel was a tough experience.
“It was the hardest shoot of my life,” Baccarin said. “Not the easiest, not the most fun. A really difficult experience. We were outside a lot. We shot in London and we shot in Iceland. It was physically draining, emotionally draining.” She also shared what viewers can expect from Greenland: Migration:
“I think that the film has really wonderful things going for it, the story of this family that really is trying to survive, and I think that that really works and I think that’s why it got a sequel. I am very curious to see it myself because I feel like it was a blur of exhaustion and running and crying, and much like the first, really.”
Greenland is currently available to stream on Max and can also be rented or purchased on Prime Video. As of now, Greenland: Migration does not have a confirmed release date.
