The Recording Academy took to the Grammys Website on Friday, 10 November, to announce the nominees for the upcoming Grammy Awards 2024. The 66th iteration is set to be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, to celebrate the biggest night for the best recordings, compositions, and artists of the year.
American singer-songwriter SZA leads the show with 9 nominations, with her song “Kill Bill” receiving nods for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best R&B Performance, while her critically acclaimed ‘SOS’ is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Progressive R&B Album.
Victoria Monét, whose debut album ‘Jaguar II’ was released in August 2023, and Phoebe Bridgers, a member of the supergroup boygenius, both follow SZA by taking home 7 nominations each. Meanwhile, eight musicians have tied with 6 nominations each, including very popular names like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, and Billie Eilish.
The 2023 “Barbie” film brought forth a new cultural wave across the world, and this phenomenon also caught the attention of the Recording Academy, as the motion picture now dominates 2024’s Best Song Written for Visual Media category with 4 different nominations out of 5.
Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj’s collaboration in “Barbie World,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance The Night,” Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” and Ryan Gosling’s energy-inducing single “I’m Just Ken” all compete for a Grammy in the same category.
Legendary singer Rihanna, who hasn’t released an album since 2016, also received a nomination in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category for her lead single “Lift Me Up” from the 2022 superhero film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This shows how much fans and critics alike await her return to songwriting with bated breaths.
Taylor Swift Breaks Records
Popular singer-songwriter Taylor Swift makes history after being nominated for the 2024 Grammys category of Song of the Year for her chart-topping “Anti-Hero.” The 33-year-old, currently on her world-famous Eras Tour, has now become the first person ever to receive seven nominations in this category, breaking the previous 6-time record held by both Paul McCartney and Lionel Richie individually.
Swift’s best-selling ‘Midnights’ also gets a nomination for Album of the Year, making it her sixth nomination in this category and tying with Barbara Streisand for most nominations by a female artist in this category.
With 4 more nominations for Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album under her belt, Swift now has 52 nominations in total, making her the third most Grammy-nominated artist in history.
