The New York Giants, after a promising 2022 season, faced setbacks due to injuries and regression, leading to a disappointing season and missing the playoffs.
A source shared that Darren Waller, the veteran tight end for the New York Giants, is expected to announce his retirement before the team’s mandatory minicamp next week.
“New York Giants tight end Darren Waller is likely to make a decision by next week’s mandatory minicamp about his playing future, and people in and around the team expect that he’s going to retire, multiple sources told.
Those close to him believe he’s leaning in that direction. Waller, 31, said during an Instagram Live on Friday that was a decision was coming very soon.
He has been contemplating retirement since the end of last season and hasn’t attended any of the team’s voluntary offseason workouts this spring.”
Darren Waller was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015 but struggled in his first three years.
He was then traded to the Oakland Raiders, where he experienced the peak of his career, earning Comeback Player of the Year in 2019 and Pro Bowl honors the year before. Despite later injuries, the New York Giants saw enough potential to pick him up in 2023.
Injuries have plagued Waller in recent years, and he has openly considered retirement in the past month. While there’s a chance he might surprise and return, the New York Giants are preparing for the likelihood that he will retire instead.
