Game Freak has suggested that the Pokémon battle system could undergo further changes as the series moves forward. The comments come from a new behind-the-scenes interview featuring longtime Pokémon battle director Shigeki Morimoto and Pokémon Champions director Kazumasa Iwao.

According to Iwao, the possibility of future changes was one of the main reasons Game Freak wanted to create Pokémon Champions. He explained that the classic competitive rules used across generations may

“gradually start changing as the Pokémon series moves forward.”

The official interview was shared through Game Freak’s YouTube channel, while The Pokémon Company has also described Pokémon Champions as a dedicated platform built around the series’ traditional battle experience.

Iwao said Game Freak did not want players who have enjoyed the familiar battle system since Pokémon Red and Green to be left behind. “Maybe it would be good to make one game that carries forward the existing battle system and lets people continue playing it indefinitely,” he explained.

Pokémon Champions appears to give Game Freak more freedom to experiment with future mainline games while preserving classic turn-based competition elsewhere. The official Pokémon Champions website confirms that the game retains familiar mechanics such as Pokémon types, Abilities, and moves.

The comments do not confirm exactly how future Pokémon battles will change. However, they suggest that Pokémon Champions could become the long-term home for traditional competitive battling as the main series continues evolving.
