Fuuto Pi Episode 4 is set to release next week. Originally broadcast by Toei Company as part of the Kamen Rider franchise in 2009, Fuuto PI is a manga series written by Riku Sanjo and illustrated by Masaki Sato. Since August 2017, Shogakukan has serialized the comic in Big Comic Spirits, with its chapters collected in twelve tankōbon volumes. An anime television adaptation was released in August 2022 by Studio Kai and Ishimori Entertainment.
We see in episode 3 that to destroy the Road Dopant’s Memory, Shotaro and Philip use Kamen Rider W’s form-changing abilities to chase him down and destroy Shadow Fuuto. Following this, Shotaro confronts Chuuta, who stole the Toadstool Memory and used the Narumi Detective Agency to retrieve it as a Dopant. Using the dimensional holes the Road Dopant created, Philip also determines that Tokime herself isn’t a Dopant, proving that the rumors about the witch were sparked by Tokime.

Fuuto Pi Episode 3 Review
In this episode, we finally finish the introduction case, which serves as a solid backdrop for this week’s entry and wraps out the initial plot arc. After building up to the big suited-up meeting between our main Rider and the monster we’ve been watching for three weeks, they mercifully don’t spend any more of our time by cutting directly into the action. Seeing Shotaro/Philip take advantage of the Road Dopant is a real pleasure. The fight goes through different phases, allowing W’s various forms to be deployed and demonstrated throughout. As it gets to this point, it feels like FUUTO PI is just showing off. To be sure, this is primarily just an indication of being a long-time admirer.
The series even plays on that preference, releasing a new remix of the classic Kamen Rider W theme music just as the action heats up—a stunt I’m sure they could have waited a bit longer to perform, but I don’t mind. With the animated format, there’s a lot of cheeky joy at seeing things get free of pesky things like filming with Japanese traffic restrictions, resulting in some of the most outrageous motorcycle action a Kamen Rider entry has ever seen! W even does the classic trick of standing up on the bike! In this case, they know exactly how to pander. I think that overall it looks well-integrated compared to something like Kamen Rider Saber’s uncanny Unreal Engine dimension. I believe some of the more obvious CGI compositings were used for the more ambitious parts of the sequence.
While this is effective as fanservice for fans like me, FUUTO PI also utilizes it to attract new viewers. Observing the form changes also makes viewers aware of how they work, and Akiko is present to explain what’s going on with GaiaMemory to Tokime (who is now acting as the audience surrogate for these types of things), as well as how Shotaro and Philip sometimes have to tape themselves together to keep critters out of their heads. It might all be confused with the conclusion of an entirely new series with a built-in history (the series itself was introduced in the same way). The argument could even be made that FUUTO PI is perhaps a little too eager to explain things.
Yes, a last-minute complication or two followed by a detailed post-solution explanation is a hallmark of detective fiction, but after all the action in the first half, the explanation of what happened gets a bit old. Finding out what Chuuta’s true deal is interesting, as is seeing how Shotaro and Philip deduced the true reason for the deduction. Even if it is a little obvious in establishing everyone’s roles at this point in the plot or taking so long to explain how Tokime’s allegedly miraculous skills functioned, it is one of those great “Everything makes sense in hindsight” explanations. At last, let’s talk about Tokime. Now that the show finally admits that she will be the main character instead of a motivating mysterious waif, the character gets a lot more personality and purpose. The fact that Chuuta was a tool on top of being disposable made us root for her, but I think we were already rooting for her.
Tokime, fortunately, meets the cast condition of being able to burn Shotaro’s ass at any time. Her ability to generate fresh emotions from established characters is already apparent (including setting up a payoff for Akiko’s “Nobody told me about this” humor, which has been running for over a decade!). This is not the case of a character being inserted by another writer for their own sake, but of FUUTO PI’s author following their natural path of development after the original series finishes.
Sanjo’s handling of women in Rider stories can be…uneven, so I’m inclined to have a little more faith in what he might do with this, even though I’m reminded of Yuki from Kamen Rider Fourze. The third episode of FUUTO PI wraps off the first case on a high note. It is the reason we came and brought newbies with us, and while it took some time, it finished on a positive note.
