Broadway producers have revealed that the highly acclaimed musical Cabaret, which won the prestigious Olivier Award in London’s West End, will be making its way to Broadway. The revival will be staged at the August Wilson Theater and is set to commence previews during the spring of 2024.
There is currently no confirmation regarding the participation of Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley, who starred in the West End production of Cabaret in 2021, in the Broadway revival. There has been speculation about Eddie Redmayne’s potential involvement, especially due to his participation in the Tony Awards tribute to Cabaret composer John Kander and actor Joel Grey, who portrayed the Emcee in the original Broadway production and the 1972 film adaptation.
The official title of the West End revival of Cabaret, “Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club”, achieved great success at the 2022 Olivier Awards. The production received a total of seven wins, including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor, and Actress in a Musical for Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley, respectively, and Best Director for Rebecca Frecknall. Additionally, Elliot Levey and Liza Sadovy were honored with awards for Supporting Actor and Actress in a Musical.

The West End revival structure
Underbelly and Ambassador Theatre Group are the producers of the London revival of Cabaret. In a significant development earlier this year, Ambassador Theatre Group, a prominent producer in London’s West End, merged with Jujamcyn Theaters, a Broadway theater company. Jujamcyn Theaters is the owner of the August Wilson venue where the Broadway production of Cabaret will be staged. This merger adds further significance to the production’s move from London to Broadway.
Following Redmayne and Buckley’s departure from the West End production in 2022, they were replaced by Fra Fee and Amy Lennox in the roles of the Emcee and Sally Bowels, respectively. Over time, other actors who have taken on these roles include Callum Scott Howells, Madeline Brewer, John McCrea, and Aimee Lou Wood. Currently, West End production features Maude Apatow and Mason Alexander Park in the leading roles.
The West End production of the Cabaret incorporates various pre-show elements, taking the audience through an immersive experience where they are led through an operation Kit Kat Club and then into the Bobby. In the lobby, multiple platforms are filled with actors and dancers in character, enhancing the overall atmosphere. According to a spokesperson for the New York production, a similar pre-show “prologue” will be featured, but it will be specifically tailored to the August Wilson Theater. However, there is currently no announcement regarding any remodeling of the theater for the show.

More on The West End revival
The highly acclaimed revival of Cabaret has received praise from critics, with New York Times describing it as a production that immerses the audience in a “hedonistic milieu” while also serving as a sobering reminder of life’s horrors. The creative team behind the revival includes Tom Scutt for club, set, and costume design and Julia Cheng for choreography.
Rebecca Frecknall takes the helm as the director of the iconic masterpiece by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff, Cabaret. The musical is based on the play “I Am a Camera” written by John Van Druten, which in turn was inspired by the Berlin Stories written by Christopher Isherwood. Rebecca Frecknall brings her vision and artistic direction to this celebrated production, weaving together the captivating narrative and memorable songs that have made Cabaret a timeless classic.
