Former GTA 6 Designer Says a Switch 2 Version Makes Little Sense Due to Potential “Subpar Experience,” Says Fans Would “Buy a PS5” Instead

Jérémy Hartvick says Rockstar could potentially make GTA 6 work on Nintendo hardware, but believes a Switch 2 version would require compromises that are difficult to justify.

Grand Theft Auto 6 remains one of the most ambitious games announced for this generation, with Rockstar Games preparing to launch the highly anticipated sequel on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. While Nintendo Switch 2 owners have hoped that the game could eventually arrive on the newer console, a former Rockstar developer believes there is little business incentive for Rockstar to pursue such a port.

Jérémy Hartvick, who worked on GTA 6 until 2020, discussed the possibility during a members-only interview with YouTuber Kiwi Talkz. His assessment was straightforward: bringing GTA 6 to Switch 2 would likely require compromises, while the game’s existing audience is already willing to purchase another console to play it.

Former Rockstar Developer Questions the Switch 2 Audience for GTA 6

Hartvick argued that GTA 6’s target audience and Nintendo’s console audience may not overlap enough to make a dedicated Switch 2 version worthwhile.

“I don’t believe it even makes sense, because I’m not sure the audience for GTA 6 is so much the audience for the Switch.”

He further explained that Rockstar has historically been in a position where players are willing to buy hardware specifically to experience its games. According to Hartvick, that makes developing a technically compromised version for another platform harder to justify.

“Does it make sense for you to go out of your way to probably deliver a subpar experience, because it does not run exactly the same when you know anyone will buy a PS5 to get your game? No.”

The comments do not confirm that Rockstar has ruled out GTA 6 for Switch 2. Rockstar has not officially announced a Nintendo version, so a future port remains speculative.

Streaming Could Make GTA 6 Possible on More Devices

Despite his skepticism, Hartvick did not completely dismiss the possibility. He suggested that advances in streaming technology could eventually allow a game as demanding as GTA 6 to reach hardware that could not run it natively.

The former developer even suggested that GTA 6 could technically be played on smartphones if Rockstar were determined to make it happen.

“If they put their mind to it, you could be playing GTA 6 on your phone because that technology exists and it has been proven.”

For now, GTA 6 is officially scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while Rockstar has yet to announce versions for Switch 2 or PC.
