Forever Young Filming Locations
Mel Gibson plays Daniel McCormick in this romantic tale, a WWII pilot who was frozen in 1939 and thawed out by a young Elijah Wood 50 years later. McCormick crashed in 1939 at the bogus ‘Alexander Field,’ which was built on an abandoned airfield in Moorpark, on Route 118, northwest of Los Angeles, on the way to Ventura.
The Van Nuys Airport tower, located at 6590 Hayvenhurst Avenue between Roscoe Boulevard & Vanowen Street, is still set up as it was in 1992. The 1939 diner was constructed on a corner in Claremont, California, five miles north of Northridge, California, for the 1992 scenes. Claremont is located east of Los Angeles, north of Pomona.
East of Long Beach on the I-405 is Los Alamitos Army Airfield, where the “Wings of Freedom” airshow was filmed. The shingled cottage was on a rocky cliff at Point Arena, in Mendocino County, on the California coast about 120 miles north of San Francisco, Route 1.
It was constructed for the film opposite an existing lighthouse but has since been demolished. The Point Arena Lighthouse is accessible for tours.
Plot Of The Movie
In 1992, 53 years later, ten-year-old airplane enthusiast Nat Cooper and his friend Felix were playing in the military storage facility containing the chamber when they unintentionally turned it on and awakened McCormick, leaving Nat’s coat behind. Before realizing the year, McCormick awakens and flees.
When he first tells the military about his experiences, they regard him as crazy, which makes McCormick even more determined to find out what happened to him. Following the address on the jacket back to Nat, McCormick makes friends with him. He hides in Nat’s treehouse and helps Nat’s mother, Claire escape Fred, her abusive ex-boyfriend, while also slightly hurting his hand.
He gets his wound treated by Claire, and they grow close. She permits McCormick to stay, and the two eventually construct a mock cockpit for a bomber in Nat’s treehouse so that McCormick may instruct Nat in flying. After collapsing and ending up in the hospital, McCormick learns that his body is weakening as he ages.
Susan, Finley’s daughter, tells McCormick that her father passed away in a fire before Susan was even born. She provides McCormick her father’s diaries, which describe the cryogenic technique, and Finley’s notes, which reveal that accelerated aging is permanent. Susan also says that Helen is still alive, but they manage to flee before being discovered by the FBI, who is now looking for McCormick.
