A one-of-a-kind love story, Fellow Travelers, is worth seeing! It transports us to Washington during the McCarthy era when two polar opposite men meet and fall in love amid difficult circumstances. But they each chose to go in different directions in search of food.
After all these years, they finally crossed paths again, suggesting that fate had other ideas. While the other is deeply devoted to his religion, the former is pursuing a prosperous political career. This show depicts the darkest period in American history in addition to a love story.
As Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller, Matt Bomer, Jonathan Bailey, Allison Williams, Jelani Alladin, Noah Ricketts, Frankie Hines, Matt Visser, David Schinem, and Linus Roache, Senator Wesley Smith, are joining the cast of Fellow Travelers.
Additionally, it has supporting performances from Erin Neufer as Mary Johnson, Will Brill as Roy Cohn, Chris Bauer as Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, Keara Graves as Miss Addison, Christine Horne as Jean Kerr, Andy Milne as Andre, and Jane Moffat as Helen.
Recap
Hawk calls Tim and arranges for him to start a lucrative entry-level position as a junior assistant in Senator Joseph McCarthy’s office after pursuing Tim on his own and making subtle but obvious insinuations. Hawk still believed it was a good idea to support Tim in his career to the best of his ability, even in light of the growing threat that McCarthy posed due to his political determination to identify and shun anyone who has engaged in communist or LGBTQ+ activities by labelling them “subversives and deviants”.
When Hawk unexpectedly shows up at Tim’s place, Tim quickly discovers that Hawk wasn’t just trying to get him the job. The majority of the first episode of Fellow Travelers takes place in the early 1950s when Hawk was widely believed to be unofficially engaged to Senator Smith’s daughter Lucy.
Hawk seemed entirely appreciative of and supportive of Senator Smith’s essentially traditional method of arranging their marriage. Early in the episode, it is revealed that Hawk marries Lucy Smith and has children with her, suggesting that there won’t be a happily ever after for Tim and Hawk’s affair.
In one moment, an elderly Lucy appears to be aware of Hawk and Tim’s past but continues to stand by her husband. Hawk is put in a challenging situation where he must assist George Bauers, one of his professional pals on the Hill.
Bauers was reportedly observed leaving a well-known gay nightclub and watched by detectives who supported McCarthyism. Fearing for the future of his political career, he resorted to Hawk, a reliable buddy, who devises a scheme to provide the identity of a well-known gay employee in Washington, D.C., in exchange for a lighter sentence. Separately, Bauers follows Hawk’s suggestion and looks for someone to accuse to save his skin.
Spoilers
The title for the episode is “Bulletproof.” Hawk withdraws from Tim once the State Department starts looking into possible homosexuals, leading Tim to doubt his religious beliefs. Mary, Hawk’s coworker, is suspected. After a disagreement with Roy Cohn, journalist Marcus loses his job.
However, drag performer Frankie consoles him. Hawk leans in closer to Lucy Smith, in need of cover. When Tim’s sister prohibits him from seeing Tim, Hawk witnesses gay life during the AIDS crisis in 1980s San Francisco.
