The Fast & Furious franchise is undergoing significant changes post-Fast X, and Zach Dean, the writer of Fast X, is currently working on a new script for the iconic series. The nature of the script remains uncertain, with speculations suggesting it might be for Fast X: Part 2 or an entirely new Fast & Furious installment that could potentially move away from the central character, Dominic Toretto, played by Vin Diesel, and his family.
Universal Pictures has been reviewing the most recent draft of the Fast X: Part 2 script by Oren Uziel and Christina Hodson, finding “a lot of good stuff in there,” according to Sneider.
However, the studio currently prioritizes the development of the Luke Hobbs spinoff, set between Fast X and the upcoming 11th Fast and Furious film. Chris Hudson, the writer of 2009’s Fast and Furious, is penning the script for the Hobbs movie.
The updates regarding Zach Dean’s involvement in a new script coincide with major planned shifts for Fast X: Part 2. Reports earlier indicated that the franchise intends to return to its roots, focusing on street racing and adopting a considerably lower budget compared to the massive $340 million spent on Fast X.
However, potential challenges lie in the uncertainty of Jason Momoa reprising his role as chief antagonist Dante Reyes, with rumors suggesting he might be killed off in the Hobbs film to make way for a new villain. Momoa’s portrayal in Fast X received praise, but Universal executives reportedly found the character too extreme for the franchise.
While Momoa anticipates returning for Fast X: Part 2, he hinted that the film’s release in 2025 might be delayed as it remains in development. The conclusion of Fast X left fans on a cliffhanger, with Dante and Hobbs foreshadowing their future confrontation in the spinoff amid Dante’s quest to take down Dominic and his associates after his father died in Fast Five.
Vin Diesel previously teased Fast X as the first part of an intended trilogy to conclude the Fast & Furious saga. However, director Louis Leterrier expressed doubts about the trilogy’s realization. Additionally, there has been ongoing consideration for a female-led spinoff within the franchise.
