In a world where death becomes a dance with destiny, and where realistic scenes are nowhere to be found, Undead Unluck will keep you on the edge of your seat, eagerly turning the pages to discover what fate has in store for Fuuko and Andy. In a world balancing on the brink of chaos, their survival depends on their ability to embrace the undead and embrace the unlucky.
As we wait for October, let’s take a look at everything we know.
Undead Unluck: Details
A work by Yoshifumi Tozuka, this exciting manga series burst onto the scene with a one-shot chapter in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump back in January 2019, before officially kicking off its serialization in January 2020.
The manga has collected seventeen volumes as of July 2023. It doesn’t stop there! Thanks to Viz Media, Undead Unluck has also found a digital home on their Shonen Jump website, and fans can look forward to the release of the first print volume on May 4, 2021. The manga won the Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Taishō” (up-and-coming manga award) in August 2020.
Yuki Yase will be directing the anime at David Production. I’m sure we all have high expectations from this anime. I mean, why wouldn’t we when David Production is involved? The character designs are handled by Hideyuki Morioka, while Kenichiro Suehiro composes the music. The anime is produced by Unlimited Produce by TMS.
The Plot and Characters
When the unluckiest girl in town crosses paths with an undead guy who is unable to die, chaos erupts in the most thrilling and unexpected ways. Fuuko’s unlucky touch kills people, and Andy’s overpowered regenerative abilities never let him die, so when they encounter each other, “she finds a reason to live, and he finds someone capable of giving him the death he’s been longing for.”
The cast of the anime includes Moe Kahara voicing Fuuko Izumo, Yūichi Nakamura voicing Andy, Kenji Nomura voicing Void, and Natsuki Hanae voicing Shen.
Worth a Watch?
Undead Unluck, despite the ecchi elements in the first few chapters, exceeds expectations. It is one of the most entertaining manga series in recent years. With over 50 chapters under its belt, this manga has proven itself as a standout entry in the genre. Try to get past the first 5-7 chapters because Undead Unluck evolves into an exceptional and unique read.
“Similar SCP, Hunter x Hunter, and even Dragon Ball Z in terms of character design,” the story is full of twists and turns consisting of many arcs. It’s not your typical “kill God” narrative; it’s better than such tropes. The author adds the concepts of “Uma” and “Negators” into the story, making it a well-developed narrative.
The manga creates its own set of rules, introducing concepts such as “multiple languages, peculiar stars in the sky, fluid notions of time, and even temporary absences of death.” The foreshadowing and detailed world-building make this series a great experience.
The story thus far is gripping, keeping readers eagerly turning the pages, and so we’re sure the anime will be successful in putting forward an entertaining watch.
