Even after a decade, Fede Alvarez’s adaptation of Evil Dead remains one of the most gore-filled movies that the world has ever seen. Belonging to the infamous franchise first started by Sam Raimi, this 2013 version of the film not only managed to capture the same intensity of horror the 1981 film had but also left its audience speechless with its surplus amounts of sickening scenes.
When Sam Raimi introduced the first film, it ended up attracting a large number of viewers mainly due to its focus on factors like thrill and slaughter instead of the usual paranormal horror. Fede Alvarez made sure that his movie would include elements from the previous film but would also have its separate world. This is different from the latest movie Evil Dead Rise, as this 2023 version is a sequel to the first movie and continues after the events of the first film.
Evil Dead 2013 features Jane Levy, Lou Taylor Pucci, Shiloh Fernandez, and others as its main cast. It doesn’t have any scenes with the franchise legend, Bruce Campbell, although we see a short glimpse of him after the post-credit scene. This version involves two siblings and their friends all heading over to a hidden cabin in the woods to help Mia (the sister) get rid of her Heroin addiction. What follows afterward is a general storyline where the characters somehow get ahold of the cursed book “Necronomicon,” which unleashes the deadites.
The movie has received many awards up until now, some of which include the Fright Meter award, the Fangoria Chainsaw award, and the International Film Music Critics award. Evil Dead 2013 managed to collect almost $96 million through the box office, making it quite a successful film. That’s no surprise, as no other movie could come close to its level of bloody violence.
Evil Dead 2013: Summary Of The Horror Film
The movie begins with a short scene that shows events three years before the film’s main plot. A young girl runs through the forest but is caught by hillbillies. She is taken to a cottage and tied up by her father while another old woman starts chanting. The girl is later found to be possessed by a demon and is killed by her father.
Back in the present, Mia and her friends Eric and Olivia are staying in the same cabin. They are visited by David, Mia’s brother, and his girlfriend named Natalie. Mia chose to stay at the cabin until she successfully overcame her addiction. Their stay is made unpleasant when Mia starts complaining about a decaying smell that only she can smell clearly due to her withdrawal symptoms. No one believes her until David’s dog, Grandpa, guides them to a cellar that is the source of the smell.
They find dead animals as well as a book named Naturom Demonto. Eric ends up chanting a spell from the book, which causes the evil forces that have been dormant to become active. Mia starts seeing demonic apparitions that look like her. She tries running away when no one believes her but is stopped by the demons. She is later fully possessed and starts to kill everyone in the cabin.

Grandpa is found dead, and Olivia becomes a deadite soon afterward. Eric remembers the book and explains how it said that the demon would have to kill five people to unleash the abomination. David manages to pour gasoline all around the house but doesn’t burn Mia alive when he hears her sing their childhood lullaby.
He tries to take her out and bury her alive, but a possessed Eric ends up attacking David right after he saves Mia from the demon. After locking himself in with Eric, David sets fire to the whole house. Their efforts are in vain as five souls are already claimed, causing the abomination to rise out of the ground. Mia has an intense battle with the demon and eventually kills it after slicing it in the middle. The book is later shown closing on its own.
Evil Dead 2013: Ending Explained
The ending scene shows Mia’s ultimate fight with the abomination, where she has to use the classic Evil Dead weapon, a chainsaw, to ward off the satanic being. The abomination ends up injuring her left arm, which Mia has to tear off from under the car. She uses her stump to hold the chainsaw and uses the other hand to mutilate the creature. The chainsaw cuts the abomination in half, thereby killing it. The remains are absorbed into the ground, showing that the demons were finally sent back to hell for now.
Mia wears the necklace her brother gave her and stared at the camera. This scene shows her finally escaping the deadite, although she is the sole survivor. The Naturom Demonto closes on its own, indicating that the demons were now no longer a threat, but the book is now awaiting to be discovered by someone new. After the end credits scene, Ash Williams shows up, which was probably just a little cameo by the actor as he’s the face of the franchise.
The whole movie was just another incident of the cursed books being discovered and causing havoc to the people that it read it. There are supposedly three different books, with each adaptation of Evil Dead featuring a different version of the book. Evil Dead Rise and Evil Dead 2013 aren’t connected but have similar features inspired by the original movies. At present, Evil Dead 2013 can be streamed on Netflix and Prime Video.
