Apple TV+’s “Land of Women” is a feel-good show that is perfect for those who can’t travel right now. The story follows Gala (Eva Longoria), a New Yorker who runs a bottle shop.
Her life gets turned upside down when she learns her husband is in massive debt. With criminals after them, Gala is forced to flee the country with her mother, Julia (Carmen Maura), and her teenage daughter, Kate (Victoria Bazua). They head to La Muga, a small town in Spain where Julia used to live.
What Is ‘Land of Women’ About?
Gala hopes for a fresh start, but the townspeople aren’t welcoming. Julia’s past as a rebellious teenager left a bad taste in their mouths. Gala struggles to connect with the community, especially since they see her as just like her mother.
While Gala is the main character, it’s Carmen Maura who steals the show. She plays Julia, who now suffers from memory lapses. Back in her childhood home, Julia tries to make amends and uncover the secrets of her past.
“Land of Women” is advertised as a crime drama, but the real focus is on the relationships between the three generations of women. Forced to live together, Gala, Julia, and Kate get a chance to bond and heal old wounds.
The show starts with danger, but the criminals chasing them are forgettable. They lack the suspense needed to be truly threatening. “Land of Women” would have been even better with a more high-stakes plotline, but the strong performances and beautiful scenery make it an enjoyable escape nonetheless.
