CBS has announced its decision to re-air Billy Joel’s 100th consecutive performance at Madison Square Garden, following an interruption for some viewers on Sunday.
Joel found himself mid-performance of “Piano Man” when local news unexpectedly preempted the broadcast in certain regions.
“Due to the overwhelming demand from his legion of fans,” Joel’s performance, filmed on March 28, will air again in its entirety on Friday, April 19, at 9 p.m. ET, CBS said on Monday. Fans can also watch Joel’s performance on Paramount+.
“A network programming timing error ended last night’s Billy Joel special approximately two minutes early in the Eastern and Central Time Zones,” Julie Holland, CBS’s Vice President of Communications, said in a statement.
“We apologize to Mr. Joel, his fans, our affiliated stations, and our audience whose viewing experience was interrupted during the last song.”
Joel showcased some of his most iconic hits, such as “New York State of Mind,” and debuted his latest single, “Turn the Lights Back On,” during the momentous performance.
Adding to the excitement, Sting made a surprise appearance on stage to collaborate on “Big Man on Mulberry Street,” while comedian Jerry Seinfeld also joined the star-studded event.
The special broadcast on Sunday experienced a delayed start due to the conclusion of the 2024 Masters Tournament.
Notably, Joel holds the record for the most performances at Madison Square Garden. His farewell show at the iconic venue is scheduled for July 2024.
