Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki has managed to leave its audiences in all the feels after showcasing its emotional yet humorous story about immigration. Starring Shahrukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu in the lead roles. this comedy-drama was released earlier this December.
Dunki’s story revolves around a group of poor friends who decide to move to London to make their lives better but have no legal ways of entering England. To bypass all security and immigration rules, Manu, Buggu, and Balli decide to use dunki, an illegal immigration method, to enter the country.
While Dunki may not be as entertaining as some of Hirani’s other works like 3 Idiots, it successfully conveys the message it was hoping to, in a powerful way. Shahrukh Khan, Pannu, and the others portray their roles well, leaving us all warm and fuzzy with the emotional yet impactful storyline.
Besides SRK and Taapsee in the roles of Hardy and Manu, the rest of the cast of Dunki consists of Vikram Kochhar as Buggu, Anil Grover plays Balli, and Boman Irani plays the role of Geetu. Vicky Kaushal appears for a short time in the film, playing the role of the lover Sukhi.
Dunki: What Happens In The End?
When Manu realizes that she doesn’t have a long time left to live, all she wants is to return to India and be with her loved ones. The advocate who helped her stay in England wasn’t able to grant her a visa to India, so she decided to call her trusty old friend Hardy for help.
In the past, after leaving Manu and the others in England, Hardy took off to India on his own and lived all these years waiting for Manu to contact him again. Seeing Manu’s call lit up his eyes and he immediately came up with a plan to help them come to India.
Hardy calls Manu, Buggu, and Balli to Dubai, where he is ecstatic to see all of them after a long time. Hardy has lunch with Manu and that’s where he finds out that Manu never married anyone. To get them back to Indian lands, Hardy decides to contact a local Arabian lawyer and asks him to use illegal ways to transport them.
The agent “betrays” the gang and forwards their plans and location to the UAE police. Soon enough, the container that Hardy and the others were hiding in is busted and all of them are put in handcuffs.
The head of the police is surprised to see that Manu and the others are UK citizens and thinks he’s doing the world a favor by sending them back to India as they look like Indians. This was exactly what they wanted, and turns out, Hardy knew this was coming all along.
Using the Dubai police as a way to enter India was a smart decision that only someone like Hardy could think about. Once in India, Manu, Balli, and Buggu realize just how much they missed being in the lush green farmlands with their families. The money they had been sending to their families was put to good use, and all of their families flourished due to their hard work in the UK.
Dunki: Ending Explained
Now that they are finally back in India, Manu and Hardy enjoy the time they have left together. Manu had revealed earlier that she was suffering from Brain cancer and had only a month to live, but no one saw the heartbreaking ending coming from a mile away.
While having a cozy conversation on the rooftop, Hardy decides it’s the perfect time to propose. When he takes the ring out and turns to put it on Manu’s finger, he sees that she has passed away. With eyes full of tears, Hardy holds Manu’s lifeless body in his arms and grieves for what could have been.
After some time, Buggu, Balli, and Hardy recall the times they have spent in India while trying so hard to get into London. While they’re walking, a young immigration advisor tries to convince Hardy and the others to leave for London as there’s no scope left in India anymore.
The ending is hilarious yet emotional, with Hardy not being able to spend more time with Manu. Their love story may remain incomplete, but Manu, Balli, and Buggu were able to improve their parent’s lives in India tremendously, showing that their hard work was not in vain.
Dunki is a light-hearted comedy, with a very strong message that revolves around the plight of poor immigrants who just want to make their family’s lives better. For years, only the rich have been able to afford to shift to another country, leaving the poor only illegal means of fulfilling their dreams.
The Hirani film fully justifies the line “A world without borders”, while also showcasing heartwarming moments here and there. A story of love, friendship, and illegal immigration, Dunki portrays all of it in a hilarious & exhilarating way.
