Black-ish Season 8 Episode 3 Recap
Dre is having trouble landing good pitches now that he’s been promoted to general marketing at his company, and he’s beginning to doubt himself. Meanwhile, Bow and Ruby question Diane’s new boyfriend, who doesn’t quite meet her expectations. As a montage of her working plays, Andre proudly states that Bow is the first Black female partner at her hospital. He says that real change takes a village and that you don’t get to choose your village.
The young doctors do not want to return to the clinic the following week after their first day. Bow understands that they’re only doing what she asks because she’s their boss, not because she’s a friend. Bow suggests that she and her white male coworkers volunteer together at the free clinic, but they are uninterested. Instead, she walks over to the table of young Black female doctors and decides to get to know them. She invites Jasmine, Asia, and Vanessa to join her at the free clinic, and they enthusiastically accept, giving Bow hope.
Andre & Diane
Andre spends quality time with Diane while Bow is in the hospital. After that, Andre reminds her that it’s still his car when she goes to change the channel and puts on his favorite radio show on ESPN+. He calls into an ESPN+ radio show and declares that this is the Clippers’ year, but the radio host (Stephen A. Smith) mocks him for making vague statements about how they’re going to do it.
Ruby tells her not to underestimate the power of obligation at home, but Bow is convinced that she isn’t just any ordinary boss. She’s determined to become their friend, so she invites them out for a happy hour that isn’t related to work. Bow tries to lighten the mood by ordering two bottles of pink wine for the table during happy hour.
Pops & Ruby
Pops and Ruby show up at the poker party to teach Jack a lesson. When they get stuck in a hole, Jack realizes that gambling isn’t for him, and Ruby and Pops decide to go to Vegas. At the hospital, Bow recognizes that being in a league of her own can be isolating but that the effort she put in to get there is worthwhile if it makes things easier for those who come after her. Dre apologizes for his actions and asks for a truce when Stephen A. Smith arrives at the Johnsons’ house. Stephen, it turns out, is there to see Diane and pleading with her to retract what she said on air. Diane agrees to talk about it.
