Dragon Ball Super: Beerus has featured a new Japanese voice for Yamcha in Episode 3, with Ryota Suzuki taking over the character following Toru Furuya’s departure from the role. The change connects the enhanced 2026 anime with the recasting already introduced in Dragon Ball DAIMA, marking another notable update for the franchise’s returning series.

The new version of Dragon Ball Super revisits the original television anime with revised scenes, updated visuals, and redesigned sound. While much of the familiar story remains, the recast makes clear that the enhanced edition is not simply reusing every element of the original production unchanged.

The third episode aired in Japan on October 25, 2026. The use of Suzuki as Yamcha was first highlighted by SupaChronicles, which noted the casting change in the latest episode.

Why Yamcha Was Recast After Toru Furuya’s Departure

Furuya’s departure followed a controversy that became public in May 2024. The veteran voice actor acknowledged having an extramarital relationship with a female fan that lasted four and a half years and admitted to physically assaulting her during an argument. His comments prompted significant backlash and led to changes in several of his long-running voice roles.

In a statement reported by ORICON News, the Dragon Ball DAIMA production confirmed that Suzuki would replace Furuya as Yamcha beginning with the series’ first episode in October 2024. Suzuki subsequently continued in the role for Dragon Ball Super: Beerus.

The change is particularly notable because Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is intended to improve upon the original television series rather than simply present it again without alterations. The production features revised scenes, enhanced visuals, updated sound design, and changes to the story’s presentation. The inclusion of Suzuki’s performance also demonstrates that the enhanced edition can incorporate newer voice recordings where needed.

However, the extent of the voice cast changes remains an important distinction. Some performers have indicated that they did not record new dialogue for the project, meaning the production appears to combine existing recordings with newly recorded material. Yamcha’s recasting provides a clear example of how the series is handling at least one major casting change.

Dragon Ball Super: Beerus began airing in Japan on October 11, 2026, and revisits the events surrounding Beerus’ arrival on Earth. The enhanced series is also part of the franchise’s wider plans ahead of Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, although further details about that project’s release remain limited.
