Donald Glover incorporated personal parenting experiences for his role in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
During an interview at the premiere of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” the 40-year-old actor and rapper addressed whether his own parenting experience influenced his acting decisions in the series. “My brother had just become a new father as well so a lot of it was like the parenting stuff of like, ‘You’re driving me up a wall, but you’re the most important thing right now.’ ” Glover tells.
“‘I need to take a break.’ They teach you so much about, ‘Oh I need to take a break.’ And the world is brand new to them which also gives you such a big joy in another way.”
Glover, father to three sons – Legend, Drake, and Donald Glover III – shares them with his wife, Michelle White. In 2020, he announced the arrival of his son Donald during the pandemic in a GQ interview with actress Michaela Coel.
“You know, I had [a kid] during the coronavirus,” he told Coel, before explaining that the birth came amid nationwide protests over George Floyd’s death.
“Yeah, it was nuts,” Glover continued. “I was in the hospital bed. My son had just been born, like, an hour before and I was watching the George Floyd video. It was such a weird moment.”
The “Solo: A Star Wars Story” star mentioned that the youngest, Donald, was named in honor of his late father, Donald Glover Sr., who passed away in 2018.
“It was such an intense, weird moment, because I’m watching that video and it’s like eight minutes long, so you’re sitting there and I had just had this amazing, joyful, expanding moment, plus my dad had passed away recently, so [my son] was named after my father,” he explained. “I don’t even know what, really, the word is to describe it. It was just expanding: the empathy and compassion and the terror and the joy of it.”
In 2018, Glover and Michelle welcomed their second child. The rapper expressed gratitude for his partner, acknowledging her for handling the challenging aspects, stating, “She does all the hard stuff, to be honest.” He emphasized her support and how parenthood provided him with a new perspective on life.
