“Doctor Who” is a familiar show to all; it’s a British sci-fi television series that has been broadcast on BBC ONE since 1963. Now, it has 26 seasons (1963–1989) and 13 series that have been streamed on Amazon Prime since 2005–present. The lead character of the series is “Doctor Who.”
This allows the viewers to explore the adventures of a Time Lord, who is referred to as “Doctor Who” throughout the series. He explores the universe in a time machine called TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), which looks like a blue police box.
The role of the doctor has been played by a series of different actors; the very first actor to appear as Doctor Who was William Hartnell; Jodie Whittaker was the first female doctor; and now, over Christmas, Ncuti Gatwa will appear as the 15th Doctor Who.
“Moments of Me,” shared by the stars
Recently, the 60th anniversary of the show was celebrated, where stars shared their “favorite moments” from the show and shared their memories of the series. It was also announced by Whittaker that she would not be making an appearance as Doctor Who in the series anymore; she has confirmed her setback from the series.
The granddaughter of William Hartnell (the first Doctor Who), Jessica Carney, shared a small incident that happened to her related to the series. Carney stated that she was six years old when the show started, and Carole Ann Ford used to play the role of the doctor’s granddaughter; hence, people often used to merge them.
When she was seven, she visited Riverside Studios and noticed his grandfather putting on a wig and costume. While shooting for “The Web Planet” was going on, suddenly someone took the fiberglass Zarhi’s head and put it over her, thinking she was a part of the shoot. In this moment of hers, she also added, “I did think the monoptera were rather ridiculous, though!”
Charlie Cragss, who has been playing the role of Cleopatra in the Doctor Who: Redacted audio series since 2022, shared how her role has been an effective lesson for her. Craggs said, “My favorite Doctor Who moment is me. Not in a big-headed way; it was my first ever acting gig, and I could definitely do better now, but in a way beyond me.”
Craggs also mentioned that the importance the role has brought to her life can’t be expressed. Also, the impact that she has on herself after playing the role of a trans woman, which is written by a trans woman, is the most grateful thing for her.
She added that it’s hard for her to explain the whole emotion once and for all. The best that can be said is that she feels blessed to be a part of this legacy of this moment and for being a part of the legacy of Doctor Who, as it means much to her.
Apart from the stars, the composer and member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (1978–1998), Elizabeth Parker’s moments for me were “The Stones of Blood.” She said that back in 1977, it was a different task to get into the radiophonic workshop, but she managed to get in.
Working beside Dick Mills, who made a special sound for “Doctor Who,” was momentous for her. She had to face a lot of obstacles, but the challenges were the start of her career.
Who’s the upcoming “Doctor Who”?
On the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, Jodie Whittaker shared her experience with the series and the boost it brought to her career. It was a life-changing moment in her life. Though she has declared her setback from the show, she has also said that if she’s asked for a comeback in the future, she might do it.
While talking about her moments, Whittaker stated, “Because we’re all capable of the most incredible change. We can evolve while still staying true to who we are. We can honor who we’ve been and choose who we want to be next.” Whittaker’s statement didn’t only seem for Doctor Who but also for the growing 21st century.
David Tennant will be seen as the fourteenth doctor in the new episodes to be aired on Saturday. Later on, the Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will enter as the fifteenth doctor at Christmas.
