Death Note is one of the most popular anime out there. It is a dark, psychological thriller anime that literally has fans all around the world. With just 37 episodes and a single season, it conveyed a story like never before. The original anime went on to receive numerous live-action movies, but none compare to the original anime in all its glory. The Death Note anime was first released in October 2006. But, throughout it all, fans had a burning question that they wanted answers for. In this article, we would be talking about did L know Light was Kira? Along with that, we will also look into the storyline and events leading up to it.
Death Note is truly one of those anime that left us with so many questions and a little bit of anxiety. It was a roller-coaster ride right from the very beginning to the end. The characters that came along only made the storyline more and more intriguing. To be honest, when I first started watching it, it was definitely good as we could see a normal guy like any of us doing the deed of God. He thought of himself as being a God and punishing those who had it coming. At first, it was all going well but later is where things started to unfold. Enough with the philosophy, let us now look at did L know Light was Kira?
Death Note Storyline
The story starts when Ryuk, a Shinigami was bored in his realm. So he decided to randomly drop his Death Note in the human world. The book is then picked up by a high-school boy named Light Yagami. After reading the rules of Death Note, he thinks that it might be some sort of prank and drops the book. But then immediately picks it up to test out. After several attempts on criminals, Light comes to the conclusion that this book indeed works. A few days after which, Ryuk finally visits him and explains to him that he can only be seen by the ones who touch the notebook. Light names himself Kira, a Japanese word for the killer.
Soon, the news of criminals dying from heart attacks and accidents breaks, and the press all around the world think that Kira is a mastermind behind all this. And a task force is formed to apprehend him, which is led by his own father, Soichiro Yagami. But to counter a smart enemy like Kira, they need an equally smarter person. Enter L. L Lawliet is a detective known worldwide for his exceptional skills and deduction abilities. He tricks Kira/Light into revealing the region he resides in, thus making the search radius even smaller. As the attacks continue, L comes to the conclusion that Kira has a very intricate knowledge of the working of the police force. He then puts FBI agents at the house of each member of the investigation team to see if Kira is among them.
Yes, L knew Light was Kira, and this was the reason why he appointed FBI agents to each investigation member’s house. However, Light strategically kills him and other FBI agents sent to Japan. This question had been bugging many fans, and this time they have an answer. L, as mentioned in the anime, was 5% sure that Light was Kira but never openly said the same. If only he had been more sure, Light would have been caught and executed. But Light was smart, and he had thought of multiple exit strategies beforehand.
He made a fail-safe in his drawer to store the Death Note. In the event that he had been caught and his room would have been searched, the fail-safe would incinerate the Death Note. And along with that, would burn any or all evidence. Jumping to the topic at hand, L was very close to proving that Light was Kira. He went on to attend the same high school as him. They even started spending time together. He made him believe that he was not Kira by wiping both his and Misa’s memory by handing over the Death Note to someone else.
After this incident, Light officially joins the investigation of Kira. They ultimately catch the guy who was handed the Death Note, but L soon comes to realize that he might not be Kira. Light then tries to frame Misa as Kira, which Rem (Misa’s Shinigami) can’t accept. Misa is then ordered to be executed, but Rem has formed an emotional bond with her. She then kills L and ultimately turns to dust too. And this was how he killed L without even casting a shadow of doubt on him.
So to summarize the question, did L know Light was Kira? Yes, he did know that, but Light was one step ahead of him. Light Yagami can be considered one of the smartest anime characters of all time. Even though he was pushed in the corner, he would find a way to come back out. Just the way he did the first time with the FBI agents and then again with L. With Misa, he devised the perfect plan in which neither Misa nor him would get hurt. He turned the love of one Shinigami over the other human against L., which ultimately led to L’s demise.
