One Piece is a long-running anime series that follows the story of young adult Monkey D. Luffy as the central protagonist, who discovers his passion for the sea after getting inspired by his idol pirate, ‘Red Haired’ Shanks. Thus, Luffy undertakes a journey to the sea to become the King of Pirates and discover hidden treasures along the way. One Piece, written by Eiichiro Oda and published by Shonen Jump, first debuted as an anime series in 1999, two years after its manga serialization has gathered much love and popularity. Otakus unanimously know that the world of anime wouldn’t be the same without the goofy pirate and his Nakama. One thing that is extremely curious about the anime is the fact that not much is known about the Pirate King, who single-handedly started the Golden Age of Pirates. Fans have wondered if a Devil Fruit was the cause of Roger’s unbeatable power? Read the article to find the truth about Gol D. Roger’s legendary powers.
Who is Gol D. Roger?
Gol D. Roger, also known as Gold Roger, was a famous pirate who held the title of Pirate King and was known as the possessor of the mysterious treasure known as One Piece. He was the captain of the Roger Pirates, the only crew in the history of One Piece to ever traverse Laugh Tale and the fiercest rivals of the Whitebeard Pirates. He was also Portgas D. Rouge’s romantic partner, together with whom he had his only son Portgas D. Ace as the last progeny of his bloodline. Roger was known for accomplishing the impossible as he was the only one to have conquered the Grand Line and accumulated a great fortune.
Roger dissolved his team after getting down with an incurable sickness before handing himself to the World Government to be executed. The World Government planned to publicly kill Roger in order to deter piracy, but his final statement that whoever discovers his wealth has the right to claim it had the opposite effect and commenced the Golden Age of Pirates.
Roger was considered to be brave, and some who watched his execution report that he grinned shortly before he died. Roger has also been always shown a confident smile in all of his flashback appearances. He was also shown to wear a straw hat similar to that of Luffy. People who knew him described Monkey D. Luffy as having a very similar personality to that of the original Pirate King.

What is a Devil Fruit?
Devil Fruits are unique and enigmatic fruits found all over the world that offers their consumers permanent superhuman abilities as well as an inability to swim. Devil Fruits have hundreds of distinct abilities and are classified into three groups: Paramecia, Logia, and Zoan. Their powers range from powers capable of simple things to that capable of mass destruction.
Some of the strongest individuals in the One Piece universe, like The Three Great Powers, have been granted powers by the Devil Fruit. This, along with their overall scarcity, makes them extremely valuable. A single fruit can be sold for hundreds of millions of dollars, with efforts being made to mass-produce artificial versions for use in warfare. An individual can only survive the consumption of a single Devil Fruit.
Did Gol D. Roger eat a Devil Fruit?
The strongest pirates like the Three Great Powers have been consumers of Devil Fruit. The Pirate King was known to have legendary strength and skills. Many fans have thus wondered if he had ever consumed a Devil Fruit. However, we doubt the legitimacy of this theory as he depended completely on his Haki in battle, based on what we’ve seen in flashbacks. Thus, we believe that he lacked any Devil Fruit powers. He was powerful enough to take on opponents such as Whitebeard and Kozuki Oden just from his Haki Powers. In the long-running series, not once has it been hinted that Roger consumed a Devil Fruit to become powerful. It seems that he gained his achievements all on his own.
