The summer box office has seen a strong comeback, with “Despicable Me 4” emerging as an unexpected success. Although Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has made headlines with its record-breaking earnings—almost $1.6 billion worldwide—Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” has also performed very well.
Targeted at younger audiences, this film has steadily performed at the box office and recently achieved a significant milestone.
The movie has earned $330 million domestically and $477 million internationally, bringing its total global earnings to $807 million. For comparison, “Despicable Me 4” is ahead of “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” which finished with over $930 million globally.
The ‘Despicable Me’ Film Franchise Has Nearly $5.5 Billion in Global Revenue
The “Despicable Me” franchise, including four main movies and two spin-offs, has now grossed more than $5 billion worldwide. This makes it the first animated franchise to reach this milestone.
All the films in this series have been hits, with two earning over $1 billion globally. The franchise’s average global revenue has now risen to $909 million.
The original “Despicable Me,” released in 2010, earned around $550 million globally. “Despicable Me 3” and the first “Minions” spin-off both made over $1 billion, while “Despicable Me 2” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru” each earned over $900 million.
It’s no surprise that Universal and Illumination are working on a third “Minions” movie and a fifth “Despicable Me” film.
The series follows Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), a super-villain whose life changes dramatically when he looks after a group of orphaned girls. The Minions, Gru’s yellow sidekicks, have become incredibly popular, with some fans even preferring them over Gru himself.
“Despicable Me 4,” directed by Chris Renaud and written by Mike White and Ken Daurio, was made with a reported budget of $100 million. Although it received mixed reviews and holds a 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it is available to watch in theaters and at home. Stay tuned to Otakukart for more updates.
