FX Network’s docuseries Dear Mama continues to dazzle hip-hop fans with the life stories of Tupac and Afeni Shakur, the famous worldwide rapper from the 1990s, and his mother, whose career in political activism and civil rights made her an important role model for African American communities in the United States. The show, now in its final leg, continues to meticulously narrate the events surrounding his life, musical career, and legal troubles and does the same with great detail about his mother.
With amazing editing, testimonies, and cinematography, this documentary gives us a glimpse into the life of one of Hip Hop’s legends as we have never seen it before while also giving us mass amounts of information about his mother’s career in the civil rights movement of the late 1960s and 1970s while the government agents were hounding everyone waving banners and doing demonstrations in favor of minorities in the United States.
Dear Mama Episode 3 Recap
We begin the episode by looking at how Tupac got charged with assaulting two cops in Atlanta. Tupac’s brother and Snoop Dogg share their opinion on how those events unfolded. And we see some footage of Tupac reacting to the press hounding him for those charges after a court presentation. After that, we see some edits of Tupac rapping, being showcased for several interviews, with highlights from his participation in The Arsenio Hall show.
Then, we see footage of Tupac getting arrested for sex abuse and the biased coverage the press gave that piece of news at the time. Some of the testimonials present some sort of justification for Tupac’s gun antics, while others are critical of his attitude in hindsight.
Later on, there are testimonies on how the alleged sexual abuse of that woman in New York took place in that hotel room. Those around Tupac stand by his innocence, and the documentary goes to great lengths to describe Tupac’s reactions to those accusations. Moreover, we see some footage of Tupac expressing his respect for women.

Afeni’s Civil Rights Career
After that, the movie covers some of Tupac’s mom, Afeni’s relationship with men. And we move to see how Afeni’s civil rights advocate career unfolds by the 1970s with the court problems that hounded her and her acquaintances. We learn of how Afeni managed to represent herself on some occasions, impressing the judicial system with her ability to make compelling arguments.
We see how the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Counterintelligence program targeted civil rights advocates with incredible bias and how it impacted Afeni Shakur and the people around her, giving us a sense of the kind of pressure civil rights leaders had back then.
The film jumps to a montage of Tupac’s handwritten lyrics and his constant court appearances, assault charges, gun possession charges, arraignments, days in jail, all while him looking cool despite all those legal troubles. Also, Shakur always said he was innocent.
