After facing months of low polling and internal party criticism, Rep. Dean Phillips suffered a resounding defeat to President Joe Biden in Minnesota’s Democratic primary.
Despite the loss, Phillips maintained his sense of humor. Within an hour of his defeat, he turned to X, formerly known as Twitter, to ‘congratulate’ his opponents.”
“Congratulations to Joe Biden, Uncommitted, Marianne Williamson, and Nikki Haley for demonstrating more appeal to Democratic Party loyalists than me,” Philips said in the post.
Phillips trailed behind Biden and the “uncommitted” option on the ballot. He previously announced his decision not to seek re-election in Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District weeks after launching his presidential bid, drawing criticism from fellow Democrats in Congress.
Before serving in Minnesota’s 3rd District, encompassing Minneapolis’ western suburbs, Phillips had a successful career as a businessman, overseeing various companies, including the Minnesota-based brewing company Phillips Distilling and Talenti Gelato.
Elected in 2018, Phillips made history as the first Democrat to represent the state’s 3rd District in almost six decades.
