The new DC Universe is moving closer to introducing its version of Wonder Woman, with Ana Nogueira already writing the upcoming movie for DC Studios. While the studio has not announced a director, Chloé Zhao has emerged as an intriguing name in the conversation following her recent comments about superhero films.
The speculation comes as attention also surrounds Adria Arjona, whose undisclosed role in Superman: Man of Tomorrow has led to widespread fan theories that she could eventually become the DCU’s Wonder Woman. Arjona has further fueled those discussions through her intense training for the upcoming Superman sequel, although neither DC Studios nor James Gunn has officially confirmed her as Diana Prince.
Why Chloé Zhao Is Being Discussed for Wonder Woman
There is currently no confirmed connection between Zhao and the DCU Wonder Woman movie. The director’s name has entered the conversation largely because she has already worked with comic-book material through Marvel’s Eternals and recently defended the value of superhero storytelling.
In a 2026 Variety interview, Zhao explained why she does not believe comic-book stories should automatically be dismissed as lesser forms of filmmaking.
“It’s important to not write off stories because we don’t consider them high art,”
Zhao said, arguing that storytelling can provide audiences with a way to process experiences and connect with shared archetypes.
That perspective makes Zhao an interesting theoretical candidate for Wonder Woman, particularly because the character’s mythology draws heavily from ancient gods, heroes and archetypal storytelling. However, her previous superhero experience is not itself evidence that DC Studios is considering her for the project.
James Gunn has previously confirmed that Wonder Woman remains one of DC Studios’ priorities. Variety reported that Nogueira was hired to write the reboot in 2025, while Gunn has said the movie was already being written.
The project is therefore further along than a simple concept, but a director and official casting for Wonder Woman remain outstanding pieces of the puzzle. If Arjona ultimately becomes the new Diana, the choice of director will be one of the biggest remaining decisions for the character’s DCU debut.
For now, Chloé Zhao should be considered speculation rather than a genuine casting or directing report. The only confirmed development is that DC Studios is working on a new Wonder Woman movie with Nogueira writing the script.
