The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to sign veteran running back and kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson. According to a post on the social media platform X, ESPN’s Adam Schefter, citing sources, reported that Patterson and the Steelers have agreed to a two-year contract. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero also reported on X that the deal is valued at $6 million.
Patterson’s addition comes amid a flurry of offseason activity for the Steelers and strengthens their running back corps, which already features Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.
Notably, Patterson reunites with Arthur Smith, his former head coach in Atlanta from 2021 to 2023, who is now serving as the Steelers’ offensive coordinator.
Patterson is poised to make an impact on special teams, boasting four Pro Bowl appearances as a return specialist and nine kick return touchdowns throughout his 11-year career.
During his tenure with the Falcons spanning 43 games across three seasons, Patterson showcased his versatility with 347 carries for 1,494 yards and 14 touchdowns, along with 82 receptions for 708 yards and six touchdowns. Additionally, he contributed 34 kick returns, including one touchdown.
Drafted in the first round of the 2013 draft by the Minnesota Vikings, Patterson has since showcased his skills with stints at the Raiders, Bears, and Patriots.
The signing of Patterson coincides with NFL owners’ approval of a new kickoff rule, signaling anticipated changes to kick returns for the 2024 season.
