As the CW has confirmed a new series called Sherlock & Daughter, the most famous investigator in the world, Sherlock Holmes, is about to make a comeback to television screens. Sherlock Holmes is the human literary figure with the most onscreen adaptations, according to the Guinness World Record.
The character was developed by Arthur Conan Doyle. The Sherlock Holmes spinoff series Watson, which CBS announced earlier this year, would centre on the adventures of Sherlock’s friend and companion Dr John Watson following the detective’s passing.
Attendees of the TCA Winter Press Tour this year saw The CW reveal their intentions to explore the world of Sherlock Holmes, putting a distinctly original perspective on the character. Sherlock & Daughter, which stars David Thewlis as Sherlock Holmes in the Harry Potter film series, will also contain a new character:
Amelia, a young American woman (Blu Hunt), following the death of her mother, begins to suspect that Sherlock might be her father. Dougray Scott, who plays Colonel Jacob Kane, will also play Professor Moriarty, the adversary of Sherlock Holmes. Check the official synopsis of the show below.
Will Fans of Sherlock Support the Unlikely Premise of Sherlock & Daughter?
Sherlock Holmes (David Thewlis) is forced to step outside of his comfort zone in the mystery thriller series SHERLOCK & DAUGHTER because he is unable to look into a nasty case without endangering the lives of his closest friends. Presenting: Amelia, a young American (Blu Hunt, “The Originals,” “The New Mutants”).
She discovers that her father may be the renowned investigator after learning of her mother’s unexplained murder. The two must cooperate despite having completely different upbringings and worldviews to unravel a worldwide conspiracy, solve her mother’s murder, and determine whether or not she is indeed Sherlock’s daughter.
Throughout his innumerable film and television adaptations and cameos, the notorious Sherlock Holmes has often been stuck with a plethora of side characters that never made an appearance in Conan Doyle’s original novels.
Audiences are growing accustomed to seeing the original lore of the iconic character expanded upon in increasingly unexpected and unlikely ways, thanks to the introduction of their versions of Sherlock’s non-canonical sister in both Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock series and the Millie Bobby Brown-starring Enola Holmes movies on Netflix.
However, this most recent action—which might reveal that Sherlock discovers the existence of a daughter—might turn out to be among the biggest changes viewers have seen thus far. The original Sherlock Holmes, known for his icy temperament and unwavering reasoning, was arguably the least likely character to enter into a love relationship, much less father a child.
Even Irene Adler, who was portrayed in innumerable adaptations as Sherlock’s main romantic interest, only ever made an appearance in one of Conan Doyle’s writings and never really started dating the detective.
Given the plot of the show, it’s possible that Amelia won’t wind up being Sherlock’s child at all, but even considering that possibility is a significant divergence from the character’s genuine beginnings.
However, Sherlock & Daughter may be trying to develop their interpretation of the character and give viewers a very different Sherlock than they have seen before.
It remains to be seen if they will be successful in their pursuits, but if handled well, the notion of Sherlock’s daughter might present an intriguing and original perspective on a widely adored figure.
