After nearly a decade, the Cleveland Browns are making a notable change to their helmet design. Departing from the brown facemask worn since 2015, the Browns will transition to a white facemask for the upcoming 2024 season.
While the orange shell of the Browns’ helmet has remained consistent over the past half-century, variations in facemask color have been a recurring theme. Responding to fan feedback, executive vice president JW Johnson expressed the organization’s excitement about reintroducing the white facemask, acknowledging the input from loyal supporters.
“We heard our loyal fans and are thrilled to see the white facemask featured on the Browns’ helmets beginning with the 2024 season and beyond as we continue to write the history of our franchise,” Johnson stated. To reveal the new look, the Browns enlisted Nick Chubb as the model, showcasing the refreshed appearance.
The adoption of white facemasks harkens back to Cleveland’s earlier days in the NFL. Originally worn from 1975 through 1995, the white facemasks made a return when the team rejoined the league in 1999, remaining in use until the 2005 season. Subsequently, the Browns shifted to gray facemasks for nearly a decade before transitioning to brown, which has been the standard for the past nine seasons.
Although the white facemask was phased out in 2005, occasional appearances occurred in recent years, and now it will be a permanent fixture in the Browns’ uniform. Embracing the white aesthetic, the Browns also introduced an alternate white helmet worn for three games last year, likely to make an appearance again in the 2024 season.
