K-pop boy group CIX member and rising actor Hyunsuk is officially stepping into his most intense role yet as the primary antagonist for the highly anticipated second season of TVING’s hit series Study Group.
The transition from idol performer to screen actor continues to gain momentum as he takes on a complex, dark role in one of the webtoon adaptation world’s most popular action-comedy franchises.
TVING Confirms Casting as Hyunsuk Takes On Webtoon Villain Ji Young Hyun
The initial news broke on July 13 when South Korean media outlet MyDaily reported that Hyunsuk had been officially cast to portray the character Ji Young Hyun in Study Group 2 and had already quietly begun shooting his scenes.
For fans of the original hit Naver webtoon created by Shin Hyung-uk and illustrated by Yoo Seung-yeon, the name Ji Young Hyun carries massive weight.
In the source material’s second season arc, Ji Young Hyun is introduced as the central antagonist- a formidable, cunning force who directly threatens the survival of the main characters and tests their physical and mental limits.
Following the media reports, streaming platform TVING officially validated the casting on July 14, delivering an explicit statement to clear up any speculation:
“It is true that Hyunsuk will appear in ‘Study Group 2.’ He is currently filming.”
Hyunsuk initially entered the public eye in 2019 when he debuted as a member of CIX, a group known for their sleek concepts and strong choreography.
He expanded into television and acting in 2021, gradually proving his range in web dramas and side roles.
Recently, Hyunsuk signed an actor management contract with Management Run, signaling a dedicated focus on building a serious acting portfolio.
Tackling a central villain role in a high-octane action series like Study Group 2 serves as a major turning point in his growing acting trajectory.
Also, he is also slated to appear in tvN’s upcoming series My Bias, My Boss, sharing the screen with his Study Group 2 co-star Cha Woo Min.
From Webtoon Success to Global Hit: What to Expect from Study Group 2
Based on the wildly popular webtoon of the same name, Study Group delivers a unique hybrid of high-school comedy and relentless martial arts action.

The narrative centers on Youn Ga Min, a student whose singular, passionate dream is to excel academically and earn admission into a good university.
The tragic irony of his life is that while he is entirely lacking in academic talent, he possesses extraordinary, near-superhuman street fighting ability.
Hoping to turn his life around, Ga Min enrolls at Yusung Technical High School, an institution universally infamous for being one of the most chaotic, violent, and academic-averse high schools in the world.
Realizing he cannot succeed alone, he forms a dedicated study group to prepare for the ruthless world of college entrance examinations.
However, protecting his fellow students and maintaining a quiet study environment constantly forces Ga Min to throw off his glasses, roll up his sleeves, and use his brutal combat prowess to battle school bullies, regional delinquents, and criminal syndicates trying to destroy his group.
The first season of the drama adaptation achieved massive commercial and critical success internationally.
It ranked inside the Top 5 most-watched titles across more than 140 regions on global streaming service Viki, establishing a vast international fanbase eager for the story to continue.
Anticipation for Season 2 has been steadily building due to a series of exciting cast announcements.
Lead actor Hwang Minhyun is officially returning to reprise his role as the lovable yet lethal protagonist Youn Ga Min.
Shin Su Hyun and Cha Woo Min are also returning to continue their roles, while veteran movie star Kwon Sang Woo has joined the cast as Youn Ga Min’s uncle, bringing veteran star power to the ensemble.
With Hyunsuk now stepping in as Ji Young Hyun, the stage is set for a thrilling confrontation between Ga Min’s study group and their most dangerous enemy yet.
