Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is officially heading to home entertainment after an extraordinary theatrical run. The epic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem will be available to rent and purchase digitally on November 17, with its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release scheduled for the same day.

The home release comes four months after The Odyssey opened exclusively in theaters on July 17. The lengthy theatrical window follows a strategy similar to Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which also remained in cinemas for months before its digital and physical release.

The Odyssey Heads to Digital After Historic Theatrical Success

Nolan’s The Odyssey has enjoyed a historic run at the global box office, grossing approximately $1.35 billion worldwide. The film has reportedly become the director’s highest-grossing movie and the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine.

The movie has also earned more than $500 million domestically, while IMAX screenings contributed roughly $257 million. Its strong performance in the premium format has made The Odyssey IMAX’s highest-grossing release to date.

Matt Damon leads the film as Odysseus, the Greek king attempting to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The ensemble cast also includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.

The release has received a generally strong response from critics, with Variety praising Nolan’s ambitious interpretation of the ancient epic. The outlet’s Guy Lodge wrote,

“There’s nary a dull moment in the director’s typically muscular, temporally complex interpretation.”

With its digital and 4K Blu-ray release now scheduled for November 17, The Odyssey will soon give audiences the opportunity to revisit Nolan’s blockbuster adaptation outside theaters after one of the biggest theatrical runs of his career.
