The story of Chainsaw Man revolves around our young protagonist named Denji, who is also a Devil Hunter, in a world where devils exist alongside humans, which takes place in the year 1997.
In this world, every devil has its own unique abilities, and each devil represents something that humans are afraid of; for example, the zombie devil represents the fear of zombies, while the fox devil represents the fear of foxes.
So basically, anything humans fear in any possible way will manifest itself as a type of the devil, and of course, the more people are afraid of something, the more powerful the devil will be, like the devil of Guns.
The story begins with Denji, who is being forced to work with an evil organization named Yakuza because when he was young, his father owed the Yakuza a massive amount as debt, and after the death of his father, the owner of this evil organization, threatens to kill Denji unless he pays the debt in any condition.
Denji has a trusty devil friend, which is basically a Chainsaw Devil, named Pochita; with the help of who, he has been killing devils, which are then sold by the Yakuza on the Black Market, through which Denji was slowly paying his father’s debt. After his father died, when Denji met Pochita and helped him, both of them had a contract, but because of the debt, they were living in extreme poverty and barely had enough food to survive.
On a certain day, the owner of the Yakuza brings them to their usual devil-hunting job in an abandoned warehouse, but this turns out to be an ambush, and they are attacked brutally from behind; the reason behind this betrayal was the Yakuza wanted to become stronger, and hence they accepted a contract with a zombie devil, who had a special hatred against the devil hunters, in particular, and because of that, this army of zombies slice Denji and Pochita up and then dumped them into the trash can.
It’s the rule in the story of Chainsaw Man that devils can heal themselves by drinking the blood, and when they are in the trash, some of Denji’s blood trickles down into the mouth of Pochita.
Because of that, Pochita gets enough strength to form another contract with Denji, which states that, in exchange for receiving the heart of a Pochita, Denji himself needs to go on and live a normal life, which is something they both always used to dream about.
