Paramount Pictures has revealed a major new detail about its upcoming Call of Duty film, confirming that the live-action adaptation will be set in the franchise’s Modern Warfare universe.
The announcement came from director Peter Berg, who shared the update during Fanatics Fest in New York, giving fans a clearer idea of which part of Activision’s long-running shooter series will make its way to the big screen.
The film remains scheduled for a June 30, 2028 theatrical release and marks the first major movie adaptation of one of gaming’s most successful franchises. The latest update narrows the creative direction by ruling out storylines from Black Ops, the original World War II games, and other Call of Duty sub-series.
Paramount doubles down on Modern Warfare
The Call of Duty movie was officially announced in September 2025 after Paramount secured a deal with Activision that also leaves room for future television and film projects based on the franchise. According to Paramount, the partnership is intended to build a broader cinematic universe inspired by Call of Duty’s expansive lore.
Peter Berg, known for directing films such as Lone Survivor and Patriots Day, is directing, co-writing, and producing the adaptation. He is joined by Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone and writer of Sicario, who is also serving as co-writer and producer. Their involvement suggests the film will lean into grounded military action and character-driven storytelling that closely aligns with the tone of the Modern Warfare games.
When the project was first announced, Paramount CEO David Ellison described the opportunity as a dream project.
“As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty this is truly a dream come true.”
Ellison added that bringing the franchise to theaters is “both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.” Meanwhile, Activision President Rob Kostich said the company intends to preserve what has made the series successful for more than two decades.
“The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place.”
With the Modern Warfare setting now confirmed, fans can expect the adaptation to draw inspiration from one of the franchise’s most recognizable eras as Paramount prepares for its 2028 theatrical debut.
