So when he, through sheer coincidence, gets to meet and talk with his idol, who is seemingly retired from showbiz and is now working at a nearby convenience store, the idea of his supposed inescapable fate starts to slowly come apart at the seams because he discovers that Nagi Aoe is, of course, simply another human, and, as it turns out, one that has long since lost her sense of meaning and is now simply drifting along without direction or purpose.
There is something great in Boy’s Abyss. The first couple of chapters especially gives these small, subtle hints at all the little things that are secretly eating away at our main character, giving you an image of the kettle right before it boils over. Nagi Aoe, literally lighting a cigarette for him at the end of chapter one going, is admittedly not the epitome of subtlety; it’s a nice metaphor, right?
After our main character meets his idol, one of the first things she does is go and ask Reiji to commit suicide with her and then change the topic by saying that she was kidding. After that, they go back to her apartment, and after he finishes excavating her Abyss, Reiji finds out that she is actually married! And the way he finds out is with her husband walking in on them while the two them together.
After this rather embarrassing mistake, Reiji decides to kill himself after all this. So he and Nagi Aoe go down to the river, and just as they are about to pull a Persona 3, Reiji’s homeroom teacher comes to the rescue and puts a stop to it. After hearing his story, she takes Reiji to her apartment and decides that she will do everything in her power to help him break free from the shackles of his broken home life. Wow, what a selfless and virtuous person, right?
There are seven volumes out right now, and they just keep getting crazier with every chapter. Boy’s Abyss develops this obsession with constantly piling on new tragedies every single chapter, never really bothering to let any of it sink in properly. Blackmail, love affairs, any kind of abuse under the exact title of the manga. Boy’s Abyss is certainly treading through a minefield of sensitive topics here.
All of a sudden, every character turns into a psychopath. It feels like they are just one step away from sitting around a table, like some cartoon supervillains, plotting how to most efficiently ruin this poor kid’s life.
