The aftermath of the collapse of Baltimore‘s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March, which claimed six lives, was vividly captured in body camera footage obtained by local media.
The recordings showcased the initial disbelief and shock of first responders from the Maryland Natural Resources Police as they approached the scene where the bridge once stood. “Dude, this is f***ing bad, like there is no bridge,” one responder exclaimed as their boat neared the collapsed structure.
The collapse occurred when a massive container ship lost power and collided with one of the bridge’s support pylons, causing it to crumble into the Patapsco River.
This tragic incident not only resulted in loss of life but also disrupted traffic at the Port of Baltimore, a significant trade hub responsible for a significant portion of U.S. coal exports.
In the footage, responders were seen grappling with the enormity of the situation, with uncertainties surrounding the number of individuals in need of rescue in the water.
Despite the chaos, efforts were made to assess injuries and provide medical assistance to survivors. One responder, after noting a minor injury, asked if immediate medical attention was required.
The severity of the collapse was reiterated by another responder in a different clip, who described the situation as “catastrophic.” The collapse prompted an FBI investigation into the incident, seeking to uncover the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
The footage not only serves as a documentation of the immediate aftermath but also highlights the courage and determination of the first responders in the face of adversity, as they worked tirelessly to aid survivors and manage the chaotic scene.
