The Bocchi the Rock! anime series has reached an impressive milestone with its two recap films, which together have earned over 1 billion yen, or about 7.09 million USD.
The first film, Bocchi the Rock!, was released in June 2023 and performed strongly, debuting at the top of Japan’s weekend box office.
It made 640 million yen (around 4.41 million USD) from 420,000 ticket sales. The second film, Bocchi the Rock!, came out in August and earned 390 million yen (about 2.69 million USD) from 250,000 admissions, placing sixth during its opening weekend.
Combined, these films have sold more than 680,000 tickets. To thank fans for their support, those attending Bocchi the Rock! screenings between August 24 and August 30 will receive special character cable holders featuring Ryo Yamada or Ikuyo Kita.
The Bocchi the Rock! anime, adapted from Aki Hamaji’s four-panel manga, originally aired as a 12-episode series in 2022.
The anime became popular for its relatable story and charming characters, especially the shy and introverted main character, Hitori Gotoh, who dreams of becoming a guitar hero despite her social anxiety.
As the series continues to gain fans, Crunchyroll is preparing to bring the recap films to theaters in North America.
The story of Bocchi the Rock! centers on Hitori Gotoh, also known as Bocchi-chan. She picked up the guitar in middle school, hoping that joining a band would help her overcome her shyness.
Despite becoming a skilled player, Hitori struggles to make friends or find bandmates until she meets Nijika Ijichi, the drummer of Kessoku Band. Nijika’s friendship helps Hitori start to come out of her shell and change her life.
