The Record-breaking South Korean Girl group ‘Blackpink’ formed by YG Entertainment was the first Korean female group to top Billboard’s emerging artists list and to top the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart three times. The group comprises four members- Jisoo (lead vocalist, visual), Jennie (main rapper, lead singer), Rose (main vocalist, lead dancer), and Lisa (main dancer, lead rapper, maknae).
Debuted in August 2016 with their single album ‘Square’, the group earned massive popularity as their singles ‘Whistle’ and ‘Boombayah,’ broke out to be number one hits on South Korea’s Goan Digital List and the Billboard World Digital Song Sales list respectively. And ever since then ‘Blackpink’ has never once disappointed their fans, they’ve maintained their status as the world’s biggest pop band by pure hard work and commitment.
The numerous nominations and significant awards they’ve won reflect their tireless efforts and creative dedication to achieve the pinnacle of their career. Their achievements include the New Artist of the Year Award at the 31st Golden Disc award, the 26th Seoul Music Award, the Mnet Asian Music Award for the best female group in 2020, and the first MTV music video award won by a Korean girl group.
Jennie’s favorite songs the group
‘YG princess’ Jennie Kim, popularly known by her stage name Jennie, is a South Korean singer and rapper. Born in Gangnam du, Seoul, South Korea, she began her career as a soloist in November 2018 with a title track “solo” which was a huge success. The single debuted remarkably well, topping both the Goan Digital Chart and Billboard’s World Digital Songs Chart, giving Jennie worldwide recognition in addition to her status as a member of the ‘Blackpink’.
Jennie became the first Korean solo artist to perform at Coachella in April 2019. The performance was was so impressive that Billboard highlighted it in their list of “The 10 Best Things We Saw at Coachella 2019” labeling it ‘mind-blowing’ and ‘stunning’ for fans and casual spectators.
Her fangirling for Rihanna and valued inputs of Shin Yoo-mi that included appreciation for her singing rapping and songwriting skills have fueled her charisma for what she is today.

In September 2020, the queens of Blackpink shared their Spotify playlist ahead of their album release. Among Jennie’s playlist, she listed their group song ‘Ice cream’, a duet with Selena Gomez on her playlist.
Also, in 2021, Jennie released a playlist for Coco Neige in which she included ‘Kiss and Makeup,’ a duet with Dua Lipa, and ‘Bet You Wanna,’ a duet with Cardi B.
In the recent episode of the legendary YouTube show ‘The Game Caterers,’ Jennie was seen playing games with other K-pop idols. During the fun questionnaire by PD Na Young Suk, Jennie was asked to pick her favorite song of the group, and without hesitation, she declared it to be their debut single ‘whistle’. Jennie then explained that it was all due to the song’s style being so different from the rest of the tracks they’d released.
Blackpink’s Firsts
With their popular single ‘Ddu-du Ddu-du’, released in June 2018, Blackpink became the first female Korean act to be certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), even the music video for the same is the most viewed Korean band musical on YouTube.
Their 2018 track ‘Kiss and makeup’, a duet with Dua lipa, was the first by a Korean group to obtain not only certification from the British phonographic industry (BPI) but also a platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).
Another record that they achieved by their two music videos, ‘Kill this love’ (2019) and ‘How you like that’ (2020), were the most-viewed music video within the first 24 hours of release, with the latter breaking three and creating two Guinness World Records.
Apart from being recognized by many organizations, Blackpink has always been one of the k-pop idols to enter the highest chartings. They are the first female Korean act to reach number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Ice cream’ (2020), and number two on the Billboard 200 with ‘The Album’ (2020), making them the first Korean girl group to sell more than one million copies of an album.
Not only this they are also the first music group and Korean female act to have five music videos amassing one billion views each on YouTube; the most-subscribed music act on the platform; and the most-followed girl group on Spotify, having over 28 million followers as of February 2022.
