Black Clover Season 2 finally returns with Episode 1, “The Battle Begins,” and the premiere wastes very little time reminding viewers why the series became such a popular battle shonen. After the original anime concluded its first run with Episode 170 in March 2021, the new season picks up directly from the unresolved conflict surrounding Yami Sukehiro, William Vangeance and the Dark Triad. The result is a comeback that feels much more like a continuation than a traditional season premiere.
The episode premiered on October 3, 2026, with Studio Pierrot returning to animate the series. Crunchyroll is also streaming the new season across the Indian subcontinent and several other international regions.
More importantly, Episode 1 understands what fans have been waiting for. Asta and Liebe are trying to unlock Devil Union, Yuno is preparing for another confrontation with Zenon, and the Clover Kingdom finally begins its assault on the Spade Kingdom.
ASTA AND LIEBE’S TRAINING GIVES THE PREMIERE ITS EMOTIONAL CORE
The strongest part of the episode is Asta and Liebe’s training with Nacht. Their Devil-Binding Ritual is complete, but simply accessing Anti-Magic is not enough to achieve the complete Devil Union that Nacht wants them to master.
Unlike Nacht’s relationship with his devils, Asta and Liebe entered their contract as equals. That makes their partnership more meaningful, but it also creates a problem because neither completely understands how to synchronize their powers.
Nacht pushes them far beyond their comfort zone with his Shadow Magic and Mana Zone. The training eventually becomes less about physical strength and more about understanding what connects Asta and Liebe. Both are driven by the same determination to defeat their enemies, with Asta desperate to rescue Yami and Liebe carrying his anger over Licita’s death.
That emotional connection finally produces a brief Devil Union transformation. Asta and Liebe manage to erase Nacht’s powerful spell, proving that the form is possible even though they cannot maintain it yet. The breakthrough is satisfying precisely because the episode does not treat it as an instant mastery of Asta’s newest ability.
THE DARK TRIAD’S PLAN MAKES THE SITUATION MORE DANGEROUS

While Asta trains, the Spade Kingdom continues preparing for the Tree of Qliphoth ritual. Yami and William remain captives, and Morris is working toward opening the gates to the underworld.
Morris is particularly effective as a threat because he represents the strategic side of the Dark Triad’s plan. The episode does not need another extended battle to establish the danger. Instead, it shows that the enemy has continued advancing while the Clover Kingdom prepares its counterattack.
Dante is also recovering from his previous defeat, reinforcing the idea that the Dark Triad cannot be dismissed simply because Asta managed to overpower one of them before. The threat feels larger than a collection of individual villains because the entire Spade Kingdom operation is moving toward a much bigger supernatural catastrophe.
THE SPADE KINGDOM RAID FINALLY BEGINS
The episode’s second major storyline brings together some of the Clover Kingdom’s strongest Magic Knights. Yuno continues training after his previous defeat against Zenon, while Nacht organizes the rescue operation targeting Yami and William.
The resistance inside the Spade Kingdom also rises against the Dark Triad, creating the opening the Clover Kingdom needs to infiltrate the enemy’s stronghold. When the resistance is threatened by an ancient demon, Mereoleona’s arrival becomes one of the premiere’s biggest crowd-pleasing moments.
The final stretch is especially effective because the episode does not try to resolve the conflict immediately. Instead, the Magic Knights reach their targets and prepare for the battles that have been building for years. The official synopsis similarly positions Episode 1 as the beginning of the confrontation between the Clover Kingdom’s elite Magic Knights and the Dark Triad.
BLACK CLOVER SEASON 2 EPISODE 1 REVIEW: A STRONG RETURN AFTER THE HIATUS
The biggest success of Black Clover Season 2 Episode 1 is its pacing. After such a long absence, the anime could easily have spent most of its runtime recapping previous events. Instead, it provides just enough context before moving into the action.
The episode also balances Asta’s training with Yuno’s preparation, Morris’ ritual and the Clover Kingdom’s invasion. That gives the premiere a strong sense of forward momentum without making any individual storyline feel completely neglected.
The animation further benefits the comeback. The episode is primarily setting up the coming battles rather than delivering a full-scale confrontation, but Asta’s Anti-Magic, Nacht’s Shadow Magic and the Devil Union sequence all receive enough visual emphasis to make the return feel worthwhile.
Most importantly, the episode ends at exactly the right point. The Magic Knights have finally entered enemy territory, the Dark Triad is waiting, and Asta still has to turn his brief Devil Union breakthrough into a reliable weapon.
Black Clover Season 2 Episode 1 does not merely remind fans where the story stopped. It makes the wait feel justified by immediately moving the Spade Kingdom conflict into its most dangerous stage.
