President Joe Biden, along with former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, headlined a high-profile fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall, raising more than $25 million for Biden’s reelection campaign. The event, which featured a discussion moderated by Stephen Colbert, attracted thousands of guests.
However, the fundraiser was not without its disruptions. Attendees interrupted the discussion multiple times with protests, particularly regarding Biden’s support for Israel during the ongoing conflict with Hamas.
Some shouted “Shame on you, Joe Biden,” reflecting frustration over his stance on the issue.
Obama defended Biden’s position, praising his “moral clarity” and willingness to engage in dialogue to find common ground. He urged protesters to listen as well as speak, emphasizing the importance of open discourse.
Clinton echoed Obama’s sentiments, highlighting Biden’s achievements in areas such as healthcare and energy transition. He emphasized the positive impact Biden has had on America and advocated for his reelection.
Outside the event, hundreds protested against Israel’s actions in Gaza, expressing dissatisfaction with Biden’s support for Israel. The protests underscored the deep divide within the Democratic Party over foreign policy issues.
Despite the disruptions, the fundraiser continued as planned, featuring performances by renowned musicians and celebrity appearances.
Attendees had the opportunity to have their photos taken with the three presidents by photographer Annie Leibovitz.
While Biden’s reelection campaign has seen strong fundraising support, there are concerns about his approval ratings and the tight race with his Republican challenger, Donald Trump. Trump, also in New York at the time, attended a wake for a slain New York City policeman, highlighting his focus on law and order issues.
