A storm is approaching in the Alaskan setting of the Discovery Channel’s gold prospecting program, so the miners are frantically trying to do whatever they can. The aftermath of an amazing show of nature’s fury that forced the miners, their gear, and the film crews to flee the area will be shown in Bering Sea Gold Season 17 Episode 9.
But that’s the main idea of the program—a long-form, unscripted exploration that reveals the difficulties these businesses face while trying to extract gold from the earth in order to make money.
Thus far, this season has seen it all for every crew: from one team losing its divers to another having numerous operational problems, all of them unable to use their equipment despite having invested in it.
Recap
With the storm brewing, Chris McCully is the first one to dive in for five hours to dig as much gold in Nome. Their crew has less than one day to get things going.
With the evacuations on the move, and with the weather service warnings in place, the crew needs to find as many ounces as possible, as this might be the last time they have to take a plunge for the precious metals.
Vernon Adkison sets out to do the same, his divers found a bunch of gold, but the rough weather means they have to return earlier than expected. Vernon’s crew’s gold goal is 250 ounces, but they’ve only mined 20.4 ounces. Meanwhile, The Reaper Crew manages to maintain their standings with a decent haul in spite of the circumstances.
The tides and currents can be a challenge for any team willing to take them on, as the storm puts a strain on their resources and morale. As things start to settle down, The Kellys decide to go out again in search of more gold. Still, they risk ending the season with any ounces of gold.
Meanwhile, because of the harsh weather conditions, Nome has a shortage of divers. So, Emily, who’s short on those, resorts to river dredging, managing to find a couple of valuable nuggets.
