Apple TV+ is excited to continue the story of Dark Matter. The popular sci-fi series, based on the novel by bestselling author Blake Crouch, will have a second season. Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly will return as Jason and Daniela.
This news comes shortly after the series finale aired in June and follows strong reviews from both critics and audiences. The new season aims to address many questions left by the finale while expanding beyond the novel’s original plot.
Dark Matter tells the story of Jason Dessen, a physicist and family man from Chicago. One night, while walking home, Jason is thrown into an alternate reality where his life has taken a different path due to his choices.
As he struggles to return home, he faces various versions of himself and must save his family before another, more dangerous version of Jason takes over. Edgerton and Connelly are joined by a talented cast including Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Oakes Fegley.
Season 1 covered the entire novel by Crouch, leaving the family’s fate open to interpretation. Collider’s Steve Weintraub asked Crouch and executive producer Matt Tolmach about the show’s direction.
They confirmed that Jason’s character will stay consistent, but the overall family situation will remain open for viewers to decide. Crouch intended the show to mirror the book’s open-ended nature, allowing for creative freedom in the new season:
“I never let myself contemplate what that world was. To me, the world represented a new start, it represented hope. I never wanted to know for myself, and I do this with a lot of my books.
A lot of my books have, I wouldn’t call them fully open-ended endings, but they leave a lot of room for the reader to sort of take the ball and run with it. I did the same thing in Recursion. I love that when you get to the end, I hand the ball to the reader, or to the audience in the case of the show, and say, ‘Now you imagine what’s next.’”
Where Could Season 2 of ‘Dark Matter’ Go Next?
What could Season 2 of Dark Matter bring? Crouch has some ideas. One plot thread could involve Ryan (Simpson) and Amanda (Braga), whose reunion at the end of the finale was left unexplained. Crouch was vague about their story, and Simpson hinted that their storyline might be a focus in the new season.
Edgerton mentioned the endless possibilities of continuing the show. With characters like the Dessens, Leighton (Okeniyi), multiple Ryans, and Amanda, there are many ways to expand the sci-fi universe and explore each character’s future.
The exciting aspect is that having seen the show, viewers become invested in these characters and their connections. People wonder about Leighton’s future, Amanda’s journey, and the various versions of Ryan. There are endless possibilities for the show to explore, continuing to build on the characters and their stories.
