The live-action adaptation of Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, titled Omniscient Reader: The Prophet, is drawing major attention as it nears its 2025 release. Based on the popular webtoon, the film has received a new trailer that gives fans into its visual effects and main cast. Originally announced in 2019 as part of a five-feature film project by Munpia, the movie will now release in July 2025.
The first look at Omniscient Reader: The Prophet has sparked excitement, but also controversy. In the 32-second trailer, the production teases some changes to the original material, which has caused fans to voice concerns. While the movie promises to deliver a stunning visual experience, some modifications, including the use of firearms instead of swords, have led to heated discussions. Fans have even humorously dubbed the movie “Omniscient Reader’s Gunpoint.”
Changes to Storyline and Weapons Spark Fan Backlash
In the webtoon, characters use swords as their primary weapons, but the trailer for the live-action film shows characters wielding fire-based weapons instead. Though this change doesn’t alter the narrative, fans have questioned the decision, claiming that post-apocalyptic Korea wouldn’t have ready access to guns. Despite these concerns, the shift may be an attempt by the production team to deliver more visually dynamic battles.
Another issue that’s been raised is the absence of certain key elements from the original material. Fans are upset that the trailer doesn’t show the “status window” that reveals information about the constellations.
Additionally, the popular dokkaebi character, Bihyung, is missing, leading to worries that the production team may cut these important aspects. However, producer Won Dongyeon has since clarified that the changes were discussed and approved by the original webtoon’s author, SingNsong.
In a statement, Won Dongyeon confirmed that despite the visual modifications, the film remains faithful to the original work in terms of its message, characters, and worldbuilding. He reassured fans that both swords and the dokkaebis would appear in the movie, ensuring that no key elements from the story would be omitted. Dongyeon emphasized the importance of cinematic modifications when adapting a webtoon into a live-action film.
The live-action adaptation of Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint remains highly anticipated, especially with over 425 million readers of the web novel worldwide. As the movie is set to premiere in July 2025, fans can expect a thrilling experience that might offer a fresh take on the beloved series while still staying true to its core.
