Sean Baker’s film Anora won the most awards at the 97th Annual Academy Awards, also known as The Oscars. After winning Best Picture, the film secured five awards out of its six nominations.
The nominations included Lead Actress, Original Screenplay, Editing, Supporting Actor, and Best Director. The only category it did not win was Supporting Actor, where Yura Borisov lost to Kieran Culkin.
The film won Best Picture over The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, and Wicked.
With these wins, Sean Baker tied with Walt Disney for the most Oscars won in a single night. Walt Disney set this record in 1954. Baker is also the first person to win that many awards for one project in a single night.
Anora stars Mikey Madison, known for her role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The story follows Anora, a sex worker who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch. Their love story takes a dramatic turn when his family in Russia finds out about their marriage.
Before the Oscars, Anora had almost reached $40 million in worldwide box office earnings. The film had a budget of $6 million, making it a financial success. It also holds a strong 93% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Other Big Moments from the 97th Academy Awards
The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody, won three awards. The film won Best Lead Actor, Cinematography, and Original Score. Conclave won Best Adapted Screenplay, which was written by Peter Straughan.
Ralph Fiennes and Adrien Brody were top contenders for Best Lead Actor. Some thought Timothée Chalamet might win for his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, but that did not happen.
In 2024, Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Cillian Murphy, won seven Oscars. Murphy won Best Actor, and the film also won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor.
