One of the most admired and famous actors in history has made a surprising return to the big screen, and as always, he’s completely transformed. Daniel Day-Lewis was recently seen on a film set, spotted alongside Sean Bean on the streets of Manchester, England.
The multi-award-winning actor was riding a blue Honda motorcycle, with Bean sitting behind him, during a scene for a movie titled Avelyn.
Day-Lewis wore an olive green bomber jacket, black trousers, brown boots, and black gloves. The Warrington Guardian, a local newspaper in the UK, reported that the film features Bean as an ex-soldier and is set in the 1980s.
Day-Lewis is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation. He has won three Academy Awards for Best Actor and seemed to end his career on a high note with his role in 2016’s Phantom Thread, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. But now, it appears there’s more to his story.
Why Did Daniel Day-Lewis Retire?
Avelyn marks the unexpected return of Day-Lewis, who had surprised fans with his retirement from acting in June 2017. At the time, his representative, Leslee Dart, shared a statement: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor.
He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision, and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”
Later that year, Day-Lewis opened up about his decision to quit acting in an interview with W Magazine. He explained, “I knew it was unusual to make a public statement, but I felt it was important to draw a line.
I didn’t want to get pulled back into another project. I’ve often talked about quitting acting, and I don’t know why this time felt different, but the urge to stop became strong, and it grew into something I had to do.”
Day-Lewis continued, “Do I feel better? Not yet. I feel a great sadness, and that’s the way it should be. How strange it would be if this felt like a happy step into a completely new life.
I’ve been passionate about acting since I was 12 years old, and at that time, everything except the stage—that world of light—felt unimportant. Acting used to feel like a form of salvation. Now, I want to look at life in a new way.”
