The Nara clan is one of the most well-known clans in Konoha and for good reason too. As this is proficient in the secret Shadow Possession jutsu, as well as having a huge amount of natural intelligence. Both Shikamaru and his father in Shikaku were excellent examples of this, however, it seems that the line of brilliance is now slowing down as we enter the next generation.

From what we have seen in the Boruto Naruto Next Generations anime so far, Shikadai has struggled to grasp the concept of Shogi, a game his family has used for generations to practice battle tactics. In fact, Shikadai has done nothing but lose in this game to all of his opponents so far.

This is strange as Shikadai’s father in Shikamaru was a natural at this game, while Shikadai’s grandfather was even better, as he continuously beat Shikamaru in Shogi. This game helped the Nara’s to learn incredible battle tactics and as a result, both Shikaku and Shikamaru played vital leadership roles during the 4th Great Shinobi War, while Shikamaru managed to stay on as the 6th and 7th Hokage’s advisor.

In addition,  Shikamaru became a chunin well before any of his friends, which include the lies of Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto Uzumaki, and Neji Hyuga as a recommended by the 3rd Hokage. The reason for Hiruzen choosing Shikamaru over everyone else was because of he noticedvShikamaru’s natural abilities, as well as his decision-making capabilities in a tough situation.

However, now it seems as if that line of brilliance might not have been passed down to Shikadai. There is still quite a bit of time for Shikadai to practice and develop as a charcter, however, his lack of natural talent is worrying for many Boruto fans who like the Nara Clan. It’s believed that Shikadai will learn the crucial game at an elite level soon but until then, it’s disappointing to keep seeing him lose.
