About The Show
The September 1985 debut of American Masters, a program “devoted to America’s finest native-born and adoptive artists,” was postponed until the summer of 1986 due to “logistical scheduling issues.” Yet, Aaron Copland: A Self-Portrait, an American Masters “special,” did appear on October 16, 1985.
The first of the first season’s 15 episodes, Private Conversations, was a “movie theater documentary by Christian Blackwood produced in the rarest of cinematic forms: a movie about a film, in this case, Volker Schlöndorff is the director of the Death of a Salesman television adaptation. One of two episodes that were not officially commissioned for the first season of the show, it debuted on June 23, 1986.
The series’ originator and previous executive producer, Susan Lacy, chose each subject, paired them with the appropriate filmmakers, and handled an $8 million first-season budget. Before creating the series, Lacy worked as the senior programmer for Great Performances & one of the “architects” of American Playhouse. she wrote the latter’s initial concept. She was the East Coast director of the Sundance Institute at the time of the show’s debut.
Michael Kantor took Lacy’s place as executive producer in 2014. In addition to producing and directing the Emmy Award-winning series Broadway: The American Musical & Make ‘Em Laugh: The Funny Business, Kantor directed one episode of American Masters as an independent producer.
In his capacity as the series’ director, Kantor established the American Masters podcast 2016 and the theatrical imprint American Masters Pictures in 2016, which five years brought ten films to the Sundance Film Festival.
