Most of the time, we see horror movies and even shows being promoted as “based on real-life events” however, it’s a known fact that the statement is just used to gain attention. People become curious when they see a movie or show that claims to be based on real-life events. One of the most popular shows, American Horror Story is a show that has actually used real-life events as inspiration for some of its episodes. The show has used such stories that have haunted America for decades, and this fact makes the horror series much more real and believable.

Kai Anderson
In American Horror Story: Cult, Kai Anderson, a demented kid creates a cult that is very similar to how the Mason Family operated. He convinces his cult members to drink an artificially flavored drink. This is said to be based on the real-life tragedy of Jonestown. A cult committed mass suicide by drinking a beverage dosed with cyanide.
Tate Langdon
In the first season, the charming and mentally-unstable Tate Langdon goes on a mass shooting spree to hurt the bullies that tormented him. This story is based on the Columbine shootings from the mid-1990s. In that shooting, two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold in trench coats raided their school. They killed 12 students, and even a teacher, and later committed suicide themselves.
Dr. Thredson
Next up is the popular and notorious serial killer Ed Gein who has served as an inspiration for several stories. Dr. Thredson, in the second season of American Horror Story, is based on the aforementioned serial killer as well. Later in the show, the doctor reveals his true identity. He was the notorious killer, Bloody Face, who butchered his victims and used their skin to make things.
Papa Legba
Papa Legba, who appears in a few episodes, is based on the loa in Haitian Vodou, who acts as a mediator between humans and the loa. Papa Legba also does the same in the show. He connects the witches to the spirits in the next life and also collects souls.
James March
The owner of Hotel Cortez, James March, is based on the serial killer of the 1890s, H.H. Holmes, who also owned a hotel and used it as a way to trap, murder, and hide the bodies of numerous women.
Angela Bassett
Angela Bassett’s voodoo queen is based on Marie Laveau, a hairdresser in the French Quarter in New Orleans. Between the 1820s and 1860s, she practiced black magic and was known as a nurse and healer.
Countess Elizabeth Bathory
Lady Gaga’s character Countess Elizabeth Bathory is a real person who holds the Guinness World Record for Most Prolific Serial Killer. She was a sadomasochist who became a Transylvanian countess in the 1600s. She tortured young girls, forced them to cook and eat their own flesh, and even bathe in their blood to remain beautiful.
Mena Suvari
Mena Suvari played the role of the victim of the Black Dahlia Murder, which is also one of the most famous unsolved homicides in American history. Elizabeth Short was a 22-year-old actress who was murdered brutally in 1947. The actress’s body was chopped in half, and a smile was carved across her face. The case remains unsolved to date, but one Police Detective suggested that the father was responsible for this murder.
Danny Huston
Danny Huston’s role as the Axeman is based on a real-life serial killer of New Orleans who attacked at least twelve people during his year-long spree in the early 1900s. The true intentions behind his murders haven’t been proved, but some believed either he was racially motivated or tied to the brutal and powerful mafia at the time.
Miranda and Bridget
The two nurses, Miranda and Bridget were based on Gwen Graham and Cathy Wood, a pair that was known as The Lethal Lovers. They worked at a nursing home in Michigan. They started killing people with the goal of spelling out MURDER, but it soon turned into an all-out murder spree.
