Activision is reportedly considering a major new direction for the Halo franchise, including a full reboot that could revisit Master Chief’s origins. The claim comes as the franchise undergoes significant changes following Microsoft’s decision to move Halo development away from Halo Studios and place Activision in charge of its future projects.
According to Halo insider Rebs Gaming, Activision previously explored plans for two separate Halo games. Those projects reportedly included a free-to-play multiplayer title alongside a traditional campaign-focused game. However, the plans may have changed as Activision reassesses the franchise’s future.
Activision Could Reboot Halo With Master Chief
Rebs Gaming claims that Activision’s earlier campaign plans involved a soft reboot that would have moved away from the events of Halo Infinite without completely discarding the established universe.
That plan has reportedly changed. According to the insider, Activision is now considering developing a single Halo game instead of splitting its efforts between two projects.
More significantly, the project is reportedly being considered as a full reboot and a Master Chief origin story.
The report was discussed by Rebs Gaming, who has previously reported on developments surrounding the Halo franchise. However, the insider stressed that “nothing is set in stone”, meaning Activision’s plans could still change substantially before the project reaches production.
The reported reboot would represent a significant departure from the direction taken by Halo Infinite. Rather than continuing the existing storyline, Activision could use Master Chief’s early history as a starting point for a new continuity.

Sledgehammer Games Reportedly Worked on Early Concepts
The reported plans also involve Sledgehammer Games, the studio known for its work on Call of Duty. According to Rebs Gaming, Sledgehammer contributed to early concept work for the proposed Halo projects, including ideas related to gameplay mechanics and movement.
The studio’s involvement does not necessarily mean it will develop the final game. Instead, its reported contributions appear to have been part of Activision’s early exploration of what a new Halo experience could look like.
A shift toward a single campaign-driven game could also allow Activision to establish a new foundation for the franchise before deciding how multiplayer fits into its future.
A Master Chief Origin Could Reset Halo’s Story
Returning to Master Chief’s origins would give Activision an opportunity to introduce the character and the Spartan program to a new audience without requiring players to understand decades of Halo lore.
The approach could also allow the studio to revisit important elements of Chief’s early history while reinterpreting them for a modern audience. At the same time, changing established lore would likely be controversial among longtime fans.
For now, Activision has not officially announced a new Halo game based on Master Chief’s origin story. The report should therefore be treated as an unconfirmed possibility rather than a confirmed direction for the franchise.
With Halo entering a new era under Activision, however, a reboot could provide the company with a way to establish a fresh starting point while bringing one of Xbox’s most recognizable characters back to the center of the series.
