Enola determines the poem is a code that leads to a residence in Whitechapel, where she discovers Mae bleeding to death from a stab wound. Enola finds a sheet of music under Mae’s dress, but Superintendent Grail interrupts her and accuses her of murder.
Enola makes her way to Sherlock’s apartment and learns that Sarah’s lover will attend a ball that the Lyon family is hosting. She meets Mira Troy, the Treasury Minister Lord Charles McIntyre’s secretary, and Cicely, an amiable noblewoman, there. Enola encounters Tewkesbury, who instructs her in dancing to give her a chance to come to know William Lyon, the son of the owner of the match factory and Sarah’s lover.

When they learn that they must go to the aid of heroes, Missy Moreno and her father, Marcus, are at home. Missy must accompany her father and join the children of other heroes.
Missy meets the other kids there, including Wheels, who has exceptional intelligence; noodles, who can stretch; and Ojo, who is deaf and uses art to communicate. A-Capella, whose singing can cause objects to move; Slo-Mo, who always moves slowly; Face Maker, who can create any facial expression; Rewind and Fast Forward, identical twins who can change time; Wild Card, who possesses great power but is powerless over it; and Guppy, who possesses “shark strength” and can mold water into anything.
The children see on television how the Heroics are captured after fighting the aliens. Missy understands that Ojo’s illustrations predict the future. The children devise an escape strategy after discovering a drawing of aliens breaking into the vault.
