La Reina Del Sur is an official adaptation of author “Arturo Perez Reverte’s” novel “La Reina Del Sur” which in Spanish means “The Queen of the South.” The show first aired on February 28, 2011, & stars Kate Del Castillo as the lead protagonist Teresa Mendoza, a powerful mafia queen who rose from being a poor Mexican girl to one of the most powerful & dangerous drug lords of Spain.
Artur Perez Reverte stated in one of his interviews that he took major inspiration for his book from the “Country Polka Songs,” local folk songs through which people narrate stories about some of the biggest Mexican drug lords. He also stated that his inspiration for Teresa Mendoza came from a real-life Drug Lord named “Sandra Aguila Beltram,” who was considered one of the first female Mexican drug lords.
Narcotics is mainly a male-dominated business, and Sandra was one of the first women who showed that females could also lead cartels. Who is Teresa Mendoza?
The show mainly revolves around Teresa Mendoza, a young woman who is romantically involved with a man named Guero Davilas, a pilot who works for the drug cartels and uses his plane to transport drugs from one location to another, (A practice that many cartels followed during the ’80s and early ’90s to traffic narcotics from one place to another.)
But fate plays a game, and Teresa’s boyfriend ends up dead at the hands of Mexican cartels. Teresa, now fearful for her life, runs away to Spain in order to start a new life. But call it after destiny, she again gets dragged into the narcotics business & she loses another person who was really close to her. After facing all the tragedies and setbacks, Teresa finally decides to accept her destiny and chooses to rise above everyone, and takes control of the narcotics business.
Story of La Reina Del Sur Season 3
While the 2nd season of the show followed, Teresa is returning back to the underworld after living several years in peace, leaving her days of crime behind. But when her daughter gets abducted, she is forced to return back to the underworld to face the enemies from her past. Towards the finale of season 2, we saw Teresa getting imprisoned in the US for taking the lives of 3 DEA agents.
In season 3, the story continues from the prison where Teresa has been held captive. After spending four years in prison, she finally breaks out from there and goes on a pursuit to find her daughter & settle all her scores with the mafia once and forever.

The cast of La Reina Del Sur season 3 will comprise some of the actors from the previous seasons as well as some new actors who will be joining in the third season. Actors like Pepe Rapazote, the actor who is famous for acting in the English version of “Queen Of South,” will join in season 3.
Humberto Zuria will be reprising his role as the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, and Isabella Sierra will be playing the role of Sierra’s daughter. The other actors who will be there in season 3 are Ennaunel Orenday, Cuca Escribano, Sofia Loma, etc.
