The 55-year-old bishop and gospel singer Marvin Sapp had become a global phenomenon, especially amongst the Christian community, with his single “Never would have made it”. The songwriter was born Marvin Louis Sapp in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on the 28th of January, 1967. He is the founder of the Lighthouse Full Life Center Church and had also been a band member of the Christian band, Commissioned in the 1990s before he gained reigns to his career. Currently, he is working in The Chosen Vessel church as its senior pastor from 2019.
Marvin is said to have been singing at his local church in Michigan from the age of four. He had developed a fervor for singing and had participated in numerous Gospel ensembles and troupes during his teenage years. He soon joined the Aenon Bible College situated in Indiana but dropped out after being called upon to join Commissioned after one of their group members left. So, Marvin sang along with the band on Fred Hammond’s accord, and together they released albums like Irreplaceable love, Number 7, and so forth. But Sapp left the band to pursue a solo career and was substituted by Marcus R. Cole in 1996.
Marvin recorded seven albums since the inception of his solo career and was awarded many honorary doctorates, but in 2010, his wife and manager passed away after being together in 1992. This held back Marvin’s musical career for some time, but he made a comeback and is still winning the hearts of people.

Marvin Sapp is well-known for his contemporary gospel music but has since opened up about his life as a youngster. He had confessed to being addicted to alcohol and substances in the past, accredited to “major struggles” he had experienced in his childhood which had led him down the route of intoxication at the age of twelve. Marvin’s parents, having been divorced when he was still young, caused him to indulge in marijuana, popping pills, and drinking at sixteen, and cocaine by eighteen. While referring to friends of his during that age, he commented that some are in jail or still battling with their addictions. And some others are dead. He said that though he had been singing in church at four, he was rotting on the inside till he joined the gospel troupe, Commissioned.
When Marvin started his solo career, he began fusing jazz music with R&B, and this gained worldwide attention. The bishop was making a statement when his albums started topping the Billboards. They were selling like hot cakes skyrocketing his popularity. He became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity in 2009 through his all-time hit “Never would have made it”. Marvin Sapp had released many acclaimed albums like Matter of the Heart and Be Exalted, but his song “Never Would Have Made It” from his album Thirsty (2007) can be said to be his number one biggest hit. The crossover song topped multiple Billboard charts, including but not limited to the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart for a timespan of 46 weeks, was number 14 on the Billboard R&B charts, No. 82 on the Billboard Hot 100, also No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Top Gospel Albums selling over 700 million copies worldwide and still raises people to their feet today.
The biopic of the gospel songwriter premiered on Sunday, 21st August 2022, by the same name on TV One. Marvin talks about the death of his wife and his personal. He said that though people only see his public persona, which is polite and gentle, he had been through extreme struggles in childhood, and it is human not to be perfect. He confessed to going to church as a child because his mother wanted him to but grew up falling in love with it. The gospel legend has received the ‘Billionaire’ award by Pandora and has been celebrating the release of his film.
